The Montana State Environmental Laboratory, is an EPA Region 8 certified laboratory, performing private well testing and Public Water Supply testing for many families, schools, cities, and towns across Montana. We work closely with State and County health officials, and Tribal Governments, in responding to water emergencies throughout the state. The Montana State Environmental Laboratory is certified to perform Metals, Nutrient, Organic, Inorganic, and Microbiological testing on water and wastewater. We routinely work with private landowners as well as local, state, and federal programs providing testing services to characterize Montana water for the beneficial use of our citizens.
News and Updates
Construction Update

State Environmental Laboratory Construction
-
The Montana State Environmental Laboratory has moved back into the Cogswell Building, on the second floor. We are excited to be back together in the same lab space after spreading our staff and testing across 4 different spaces for the last year.
-
Efforts are underway to bring all our testing back on-line to fully service our customers. We have scheduled several installations for new instruments and maintenance for current instrumentation for the next couple of months.
-
Thanks so much to those of you that were willing to wait on testing until we are recertified by the EPA. This is an important step in the process, and we are working hard to complete this as quickly as possible while meeting all the EPA requirements.
-
We would like to thank you all for your patience throughout this process. It has taken longer than anticipated and we appreciate your continued support of the improvements to our service and testing capacity.
Water Testing
-
-
Childcare facilities in Montana may contain naturally occurring or human-made substances such as bacteria, nitrates, lead, arsenic, fluoride, manganese, uranium, and pesticides. Drinking water with these substances can cause unwanted or harmful health effects among children and staff at childcare centers, depending on the levels. Testing is the only way to know if these substances are in your well water.
-
If your childcare center’s well water has not been tested beyond the basics, we encourage you to test your well water through Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services' free well water testing program. This program is open to all prospective or licensed childcare facilities and fulfills the well water testing licensing requirement. Results are kept confidential. To request a test, fill out the Montana Choose Safe Places Private Well Water Testing Program Request Form.

Look Out for Harmful Algal Blooms When Recreating this Summer
-
HELENA—When recreating on Montana’s lakes and reservoirs this summer, be on the lookout for cyanobacteria, more commonly known as “harmful algal blooms” or “HABs.” HABs can release toxins into the water that may cause skin irritation, make people sick, and can be fatal to pets or livestock if ingested. Report suspected HABs at HAB.mt.gov to help alert others and prevent illness.
