Risk Code 111 – Overweight Women
Overweight for women is defined as follows:
-
Pregnant: Prepregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 25
-
Non-Breastfeeding: Prepregnancy BMI ≥ 25
-
Breastfeeding < 6 months Postpartum: Prepregnancy BMI ≥ 25

Breastfeeding Women ≥ 6 months Postpartum: Current BMI ≥ 25
What WIC Can Do:
- Refer to a Registered Dietitian for nutrition education and to create an individualized meal plan.
- Educate on appropriate weight gain for pregnancy.
- Encourage regular prenatal care throughout the pregnancy.
- Refer participants to a healthcare provider (HCP) and as appropriate, to other community resources.
- Encourage regular physical activity (under HCP guidance).
- Refer to the WIC Designated Breastfeeding expert for breastfeeding education and encouragement.
- Provide education on preparing foods that are part of the WIC food package.
