The vendor newsletter going out this month includes WIC’s most recent spending impact. Thank you for your continued support to serve our families. Here are the impressive numbers for March 2025:
- 7,948 families used eWIC Benefits.
- 185 grocery stores redeemed WIC benefits.
- There were 30,030 eWIC purchased made.
- The total amount of purchases statewide was $957,548.13.

All staff, who are paid with WIC funds, must complete a time study for April. Time reporting must be tracked in the following four categories: Nutrition Education, Breastfeeding Promotion, Client Services, and General Administration. Staff time must be submitted on that month’s expenditure report.
This is a federal mandate that we submit for monthly reporting. Expenditure reports will not be processed without time study information for required months: January, April, July and October. If you have any questions or need the tracking spreadsheet, please email Lori.Reed@mt.gov.

The Montana Breastfeeding Learning Collaborative (BLC) is Montana’s premier conference on infant nutrition and lactation support. This learning event provides attendees with professional development opportunities and current clinical and practical lactation support knowledge. This conference will be held at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort on May 19th-20th, 2025. The target audience is physicians, nurse practitioners, lactation specialists, WIC clinic staff, public health professionals, hospital staff, health clinic staff, dietitians, nurses, and other interested healthcare advocates.

The WIC registration code is closed. Staff are still encouraged to attend however, the registration cost will have to be paid with local agency funding. A peer counselor meeting will be held prior to the conference on Monday, May 19th
Booking a room: The state office will NOT be covering the cost of rooms this year. However, still mention Breastfeeding Learning Collaborative when booking to get the group rate.

Montana Association of WIC Agencies (MAWA) is a non-profit organization formed in 1996 for and by local agency staff across Montana. MAWA’s mission encompasses the work we do as an association: Through collaboration, advocacy, and support, we inspire a unified voice of the Montana WIC community to assure quality services.
March signals the time of year local agency staff are invited to renew MAWA membership or become new members. Membership dues are $15 per person and are a WIC allowable expense. Montana Association of WIC Agencies Membership Form
The spirit of the MAWA community is support for each other and the people we serve. This year, the MAWA Board has voted to offer three $500 mini-grants to local agencies. It’s that time of the year again! We are asking for your feedback to our State WIC office via the annual Customer Service Survey. This survey provides valuable feedback to the State WIC office to help ensure that we are meeting the needs of our local agencies. In the past this feedback has helped us justify funding increases, technology advancements and so much more.
The survey can be completed by all staff members at our local agencies and is completely anonymous. We will have the survey available for the next couple of months and will send out reminders via our weekly newsletter.

Risk code 349 – Genetic and Congenital Disorders
- Hereditary or congenital condition at birth that causes physical or metabolic abnormality. The current condition must alter nutrition status metabolically, mechanically or both. May include, but is not limited to, cleft lip or palate, Down’s syndrome, thalassemia major, sickle cell anemia (not sickle cell trait), and muscular dystrophy.
What WIC Can Do:
- Provide individualized nutrition education in an easy-to-understand format that is appropriate for the learning level of the participant/caregiver. Most education materials should be written for a 5th to 7th grade reading level. Be sensitive to the unique learning needs and style of the participant/caregiver, which may mean using food models, posters, and handouts.
- Provide referrals to medical providers, Registered Dietitians, Peer Counselors, Certified Lactation Counselors, and other services, if available, in their community.
- Providing individualized food packages, tailored to meet the needs of participants.
