Teen Birth Rate

  • Montana’s teen birth rate (ages 15-19) continues to decline, reaching 12.2 % in 2022. This is lower than the national average of 13.6%.
  • The 2023 Montana Youth Risk Behavior Survey revealed that 39.8% of high school students reported having had sexual intercourse, with 15 being the most common age of sexual initiation. Among those who reported being sexually active, 20.8% said they did use condoms, while 18.9% said they did not.
  • Parental influence plays a crucial and enduring role in shaping adolescents’ sexual decisions. When parents talk with them about sex, adolescents are more likely to both delay sexual initiation and to use condoms and contraception once they are sexually active.
