Risk Code 601 – Breastfeeding Mother of Infant at Nutritional Risk
Defined as: A breastfeeding woman whose breastfed infant has been determined to be at nutritional risk.
*Must be the same priority as at-risk infant.
What WIC Can Do:
- Refer to the WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert, if available, or other professional breastfeeding support in the community to screen for conditions that impact lactation, such as:
- Mastitis, prolonged labor, c-section, hypo or hyperthyroidism or other medical conditions, flat/inverted nipples, and vitamin B12 deficiency.
- Refer to HCP, early childhood intervention, social services, and home visiting program.
- Refer to the WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert for latch assistance and feeding techniques.
- Guide the participant in choosing healthy foods as recommended in the Dietary Guidelines.
