Hinsdale Ambulance receives the EMS for Children Supporter Award
KTVH NEWS: https://tinyurl.com/mrzwz2we
This award recognizes an individual or agency whose actions contributed to saving a child’s life and remaining calm in the face of a crisis. This nomination was made by the DPHHS EMS for Children Program.
As the agency’s Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator, Dorothy Jensen states: “We tend to get comfortable with adult patients, but when we are faced with children it adds a higher level of stress. Our service strives to be the best we can be. We continue to train for the one time we will need to use a skill.
We had a call last fall when an eight-year-old child had a horrific 4-wheeler crash. When we arrived, this child was having a difficult time breathing and was unconscious. We received almost the same scenario from the SIM-MT truck not once, but twice! Going through that scenario and TBI training saved this child’s life.”
EMS For Children- Pediatric Save Video
The clinicians who make up our nation’s emergency medical services system work hard to ensure they’re ready to respond to pediatric emergencies. The EMS for Children Program released a video [youtube.com] to recognize their commitment to meeting the unique health needs of children.
The video highlights an EMS response to a pediatric emergency and encourages EMS agencies to take advantage of the resources and tools provided by the Prehospital Pediatric Readiness Project Assessment [emscdatacenter.org].

The Road to Pediatric Readiness with EMS for Children Colorado
When a child living in a rural community needs immediate critical care, they’re often hundreds of miles from a hospital that can help them — a distance that can determine their fate. Faced with the decision to either visit a critical access provider or travel for hours to a large hospital with critical care capabilities, rural children face double the mortality rate of kids in urban areas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Now, a program within the University of Colorado School of Medicine, EMS for Children Colorado, is helping turn these statistics around. With one rural hospital as their model, they’re proving that pediatric readiness efforts can transform an unprepared emergency room into an institution prepared to save lives.
