In 1979, the idea to develop a National Association of WIC Directors was born during a USDA-sponsored event when a group of WIC Directors gathered informally and discussed the idea to form an association to represent their mutual interests. In 1984, an election of Association officers took place as part of the first annual conference. In 2004, the Association’s name was changed to National WIC Association (NWA). NWA is the non-profit voice of the 12,000 public health nutrition service provider agencies and the over 6.3 million mothers, babies, and young children served by the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). NWA provides education, guidance, and support to WIC staff; and drives innovation and advocacy to strengthen WIC for the benefit of the Nation’s mothers and young children. |
