Update: Risk code 334 for Lack of or Inadequate Prenatal Care, which was shared in last week’s newsletter, no longer exist. We apologize for any confusion.
Risk code 427 – Inappropriate Nutrition Practices for Women
Routine nutrition practices that may result in impaired nutrient status, disease, or health problems. These practices, with examples are outlined below.
- Consuming dietary supplements with potentially harmful consequences.
- Consuming a diet very low in calories and/or essential nutrients; or impaired caloric intake or absorption of essential nutrients following bariatric surgery.
- Compulsively ingesting non-food items (pica).
- Inadequate vitamin/mineral supplementation recognized as essential by national public health policy.
- Pregnant women ingesting foods that could be contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms.
What WIC Can Do:
- Provide individualized nutrition education in an easy-to-understand format that is appropriate for the learning level of the participant. Most education materials should be written for a 5th to 7th grade reading level. Be sensitive to the unique learning needs and style of the participant/caregiver, which may mean using food models, posters, and handouts.
- WIC can conduct nutrition screenings for women to identify any gaps in nutrition.
- WIC can refer participants to other resources such as dentists, Health Care Providers, or Registered Dieticians for further evaluation and education.
