Bill introduced to reauthorize EMSC
As a federally funded program, EMSC must be reauthorized by Congress every five years. In 2024, EMSC’s 40th year, Congress will again vote on whether to reauthorize the program.
This month, a bill to reauthorize the EMSC Program was introduced in the House by Representatives Buddy Carter (R-GA), Kathy Castor (D-FL), Dr. John Joyce (R-PA), and Dr. Kim Schrier (D-WA). Read more.
Education and Training
2024 Time Sensitive Illness and Injury (TSII) Training
EMS agencies can improve Time Sensitive Illness & Injury (TSII) outcomes with a systematic approach to training, evaluation, and quality improvement. The MT EMSTS is starting a training project to assist agencies and their medical directors in implementing QI projects focused on TSII.
These time-sensitive illness and injury trainings will occur at six locations around the state. The training focuses on– heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, severe trauma, and traumatic brain injury, with three pediatric implications-Stroke, TBI, and trauma. DPHHS EMSTS sponsors this training at no charge to the students. Click here for dates and locations.

PECARN publication on pneumonia in infants
Febrile infants aged 60 days and younger present unique challenges for emergency medicine physicians, with serious bacterial infections (SBI) posing a significant risk. Current diagnostic practices, primarily relying on clinical evaluation, struggle to identify pneumonia accurately.
A recent study, a secondary analysis of data from the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN), sheds light on the demographic, clinical, and biomarker factors associated with radiographic types of pneumonia in this vulnerable population. Click here to read the full article.

Montana Access to Pediatric Psychiatry Network (MAPP-Net) presents the Pediatric Mental Health Symposium. The event will include local and national speakers on various topics, specifically serving kids with behavioral healthcare needs.
Who Should Attend?
Primary care and behavioral health providers and teams serving children and youth with mental healthcare needs. Including pediatricians, family practice physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, licensed clinical social workers, licensed clinical professional counselors, clinical coordinators, psychologists, and other medical and behavioral health professionals. Families, parents, and guardians of children with behavioral health conditions who would benefit from the material are also welcome.

Drug-Free Communities NOFO
Youth substance use remains a leading public health concern. The Drug-Free Communities Program [DFC} provides community coalitions with grant funding and an extensive, national support system to mobilize local youth substance use prevention efforts. In 2022, DFC coalitions met the goal of significant declines in youth use/misuse of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and prescription drugs. The DFC Program will release the FY24 Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFO) on www.grants.gov [grants.gov] in February 2024.

Montana PBS-Hiding in Plain Sight Virtual FB Series
Ken Burns is the executive producer of a significant new public television documentary, Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness. The film, which premiered in June 2022, voices the experiences of young people who struggle with mental health challenges and focuses on the importance of awareness and empathy.
Virtual workshops are free and open to all teachers who support K-12 students. Teachers who attend workshops will earn 2 OPI credits for each workshop and a chance to win prizes. These workshops will NOT be recorded, as much of each session will be devoted to discussion. Teachers are not required to watch the full film before attending the workshops, but it is highly recommended.
