Celebrate National Child Health Day on Monday, Oct.2!
U.S. National Child Health Day is on the first Monday of every October, where we show our support for children's health, families, and those who work hard to help them.
In 1928, Congress established National Child Health Day to recognize the importance of children's health. We all have the power to improve the health and well-being of children in Montana! #ChildHealthDay
Standard 5.10 of Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient: 2022 Standards are designed to ensure that adult trauma centers are prepared to care for injured children. It requires trauma centers to assess the “pediatric readiness” of the emergency department and develop a plan to address identified gaps in readiness. A pediatric readiness assessment must be performed during every verification cycle.
This article provides a concise guide to complying with Standard 5.10 and outlines practical recommendations for closing the pediatric readiness gap in your trauma center.
Education and Training
Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death and injuries among children in the United States. Every year, crashes kill over 700 child passengers ages 12 and younger and injure over 73,000. Many of these deaths and injuries are preventable. Buckling children in car seats, booster seats, and seat belts that are right for their age and size reduces the risk of severe and fatal injuries.
Download the Booster Seat Planning Guide from the CDC to help States, Tribes, Localities, and Territories with assessing, planning, and implementing improved booster seat laws to reduce crash injuries and deaths among children.

Pediatric Readiness Reduces Disparities in Care
A new study demonstrates that pediatric readiness in emergency departments (EDs) reduces, though does not eliminate, disparities in care. The article, “Emergency Department Pediatric Readiness and Disparities in Mortality Based on Race and Ethnicity,” by Peter C. Jenkins, MD, MSc, an assistant professor of surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine, and colleagues, was published Sept. 5 in JAMA Network Open.
Pediatric Hospitalizations at Rural and Urban Teaching and Nonteaching Hospitals in the US, 2009-2019
Research findings suggest between 2009 and 2019, the most significant decreases in pediatric hospitalizations occurred at rural and urban nonteaching hospitals.
Clinical and policy initiatives to support hospitals with low pediatric volumes may be needed to maintain pediatric hospital access and capabilities, particularly in rural communities. Read the full JAMA article here.
