Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

What is Integrated Pest Management? Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a science-based approach that combines multiple techniques to manage noxious weed species effectively and at a lower cost (Regional IPM Centers). The five steps in IPM include:

Mowing to Manage Noxious Weeds

FEW STUDIES HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED ON THE effects of mowing plant communities and noxious weeds, and virtually no long-term studies have been conducted on mowing rangeland. However, the ecological basis of mowing to manage noxious weeds and to favor desired plants is conclusive. Since leaves collect carbon dioxide and sunlight, defoliation alters competitive abilities. Mowing undesired plants decreases their competitive abilities and favors desired plants if proper timing, frequency and height of mowing are considered for each vegetative situation. This usually is based on the growth rates and growth stage of vegetation. The purpose of this document is to provide principles to consider when developing a mowing program as part of an integrated weed management plan.

Pull Your Share

Our Mission

The mission of the Pull Your Share Project is to encourage and facilitate teachers and their classes in the adoption of noxious weed sites, such as campgrounds, trailheads, and boat launches. The teachers and their students return to their adopted noxious weed sites each spring for educational weed pulls. The weed pulls are hosted by personnel from natural resource agencies, such as conservation districts, weed districts, the U.S. Forest Service, and Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks. The students through the installation of Pull Your Share signs at their sites encourage all recreators to pull noxious weeds for 5 to 15 minutes per outing day.
