If you have a pet or aquarium plant you cannot keep, don’t let it loose. Unwanted pets and plants can become invasive species when released into the wild.
Invasive species can impact the ways we use water every day:
- Spread disease to native species.
- Compete with native species for food and shelter.
- Decrease our recreation opportunities for fishing, swimming, and boating.
- Cost millions of dollars to remove once established.
Releasing is never the right thing to do for your pet or for our native species. There are options!
- Ask a friend to adopt your pet.
- Donate to a school, business, or nursing home.
- Find a pet rescue organization or shelter.
- Contact a veterinarian in your area.
Tips for disposing of aquarium plants and water:
- Seal aquatic plants in plastic bag and put in trash.
- Pour water on lawn or house plants.
- Never dump water down storm drains.
NAISMA hosts educational webinars on priority invasive species issues the week of NISAW and the 3rd Wednesday of each month. The 2024 NISAW webinar series is listed below.
