The impulse to use household products as herbicides makes sense. They are already on hand; the substances are familiar so may feel somewhat safer than synthetic herbicides; and indeed, people in Montana tend to have a DIY attitude.
However, in most cases we recommend using a registered, labelled herbicide product to control weeds.

FWP Aquatic Invasive Species Updates for 2023
Watercraft Inspection:
- Over 130,000 watercraft inspected in Montana during the 2023 boating season.
- 53 mussel fouled watercraft were intercepted.
- Over 600 intercepted with aquatic weeds.
- 5 boats intercepted transporting illegal bait.
- 3 intercepted transporting illegal fish.
- Watercraft inspection stations begin opening again in early March to intercept mussel fouled vessels returning from wintering in the lower Colorado river area.
Early Detection:
- Over 3,000 early detection samples collected in 2023

No evidence of invasive mussels detected in samples from Montana this season.
- New Montana AIS detections in 2023:
- New Zealand mudsnails detected in the upper Clark Fork in Silver Bow Creek below Warm Springs ponds.
- Curlyleaf pondweed detected in Missoula Kids Pond and in a subdivision pond in Bozeman.
- Eurasian watermilfoil detected Thompson Park Pond adjacent to Noxon Reservoir.
The 2023 AIS Early Detection Report and end-of-year Watercraft Inspection Report will be available in early 2024.
Western Regional Panel on AIS
The WRP Education and Outreach Committee released a summary document that provides key insights and recommendations for enhancing AIS clean, drain, dry outreach programs/messaging, with specific focus on key boating/boater demographics. This brief, two-page fact sheet is based on a recent survey of nearly 4,000 western boaters regarding AIS, information sources/preferences, and messaging effectiveness. Study combines drones with GPS tracking to survey feral pig abundance and density
Aerial drone surveying was combined with GPS tracking to account for variations between data collection and environmental factors that would influence detection and population estimates of feral pigs (Sus scrofa).
