Noxious Weed Awareness Week
Rangland Weeds
Rangelands host native vegetation, predominantly grasses, grass-like plants, forbs, or shrubs, that provide forage and cover for wildlife and domestic livestock, high-quality water, open space, and recreational opportunities. In Montana, rangelands make up about 70% of our 93-million acres.
Noxious weeds like rush skeletonweed, spotted knapweed, and leafy spurge, can have a significant impact on our rangelands.
Leafy Spurge
Leafy Spurge - Bugwood
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) has a milky latex sap that is poisonous. Their flowers can produce over 130,000 seeds per plant that will "explode" and spread up to 15 feet away.
Spotted Knapweed
Spotted Knapweed - Bugwood
Spotted Knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) is one of three knapweeds found in Montana. It can be controlled with biocontrol, hand-pulling, herbicide, mowing, and grazing.
Rush Skeletonweed
Rush Skeletonweed - Bugwood
Rush Skeletonweed (Chondrilla juncea) has many branches but few to no leaves, giving it a "skeleton-like" appearance.
