Dear Ward 7 Residents,
It is with heartbreak and shock that I am writing to you about the mass shooting that happened earlier this evening at 15 E Grant St.
While we await answers to the many questions we all have, here is the information that we have confirmed now:
- Officers began arriving at approximately 4:39 p.m. and entered the high-rise apartment building. Inside, officers encountered victims and heard additional gunfire.
- Officers followed the sound of the gunfire to an upper floor of the building. On that floor, officers encountered a haze that significantly limited their visibility. Three officers were injured, two of them by gunfire.
- The three officers were taken to Hennepin Healthcare. One officer sustained an apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. One officer is currently undergoing surgery. The third officer is being evaluated for an apparent non-life-threatening injury.
- The suspected shooter is deceased, and one other person died at the scene. Seven others were transported to Hennepin Healthcare. One of them died at the hospital.
This situation is still developing, and these details are preliminary and subject to change. Please follow official city channels for the most up-to-date and accurate information.
First and foremost, I want to extend my deepest condolences to the deceased and their families. No one should suffer this grief, and my heart goes out to them at this time. There are no words that can capture the magnitude of your loss.
Additionally, my prayers are with all the injured, particularly the three police officers who were injured in the line of duty. This tragedy is a stark reminder that the people who have taken an oath to protect and serve the people of Minneapolis rush toward danger when they are called. I am profoundly grateful for their courage and service.
Finally, I want to extend my appreciation to all of the law enforcement agencies offering mutual aid in response to this tragedy, including the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Metro Transit PD, University of Minnesota PD, St. Paul PD, Edina PD, and Plymouth PD.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth
