1st Ave S reconstruction, Grant St - Franklin project overview

The Minneapolis Public Works Department is reconstructing 1st Ave. S from Grant St. to Franklin Ave.

This stretch is the final connection from Lake Street into downtown with a full corridor reconstruction of 1st ave south from Franklin to E Grant. While the City is replacing the old infrastructure, significant investment in our transportation network will occur including a protected bikeway and pedestrian safety improvements. In addition, we are adding more green space along the corridor. Once completed in 2026 the new corridor from Lake Street into Downtown will be completed.

Latest project news

• CenterPoint Energy has completed their work within 1st Ave S Corridor between Grant and Franklin with some minor restoration work ongoing.
• Hennepin County's Project at Eastbound of Franklin Ave. is underway. More information about this project can be found on the Hennepin County project page.

Construction update

Construction for the project is ongoing.

• North of I-94 bridge
• Contractor is in progress with Deep Sanitary Installation within 14^th St.
• Concrete Curb and Gutter Installation
• Signal System – 15^th St.
• Convention Center Electrical work
• Storm Installation at 14^th St
• Water work at 14^th St
• You may notice increased activity from North of the Bridge to 14^th St due to materials and equipment being delivered, and crews preparing the work zone.
• South of I-94 bridge
• Contractor is in progress with Tunnel Removal
• 18^th St. Intersection is currently shut down from west and eastbound traffic due to tunnel removal.
• Project detours are currently in effect.
• During this time, please expect:
• Detour routes and temporary traffic changes
• Movement of large construction equipment
• Ongoing material deliveries
• Regular contractor presence in the area

Weekly stakeholder meeting

The Friday, July 3rd stakeholder meeting will not be held due to the July 4th holiday.

The next stakeholder meeting will be held on Friday, July 10.
