Minneapolis City Council Leadership on the State of the City and Vision for the Future
May 5th, 2026– Following the annual Mayor’s State of the City Address, the elected leadership of the Minneapolis City Council is proud to uplift Council’s successes in improving quality of life in Minneapolis and share our vision of the future.
A city’s success should be judged by how well our most vulnerable residents are doing. Success is not valued solely through the tax base – it is also measured by how well local government helps correct the difficult conditions many residents are living in.
The City Council is the city’s representative body and serves as a first point of contact for residents. Resident priorities shape Council leadership’s priorities, and together we help residents set the agenda. We’re seeing the outcomes of that leadership in our city’s most successful programs, from traffic calming to violence prevention. Going forward, a priority for Council leadership is proactively protecting residents in a changing economy, including guardrails against the impacts of data centers, worker protections from big tech, and raising revenue to shift the tax burden away from working class residents.
The last City Council was the most productive in history, and Council leadership looks forward to continuing that productivity. Unfortunately for residents, the mayor’s office has often responded to this productivity with vetoes. It is easy to say no, but it is much more difficult to offer effective alternative solutions. The door for collaboration with Mayor Frey will always be open, but Council leadership has no intention of slowing down the advancement of policies that working families need for the sake of maintaining the status quo.
Minneapolis City Council leadership has a clear vision and is ready to keep delivering for residents. We look forward to partnering with residents from every corner of Minneapolis to move these policies forward in the coming year.
