The Minneapolis Public Works Department is reconstructing 1st Ave. S from Grant St. to Franklin Ave.
This stretch is the final connection from Lake Street into downtown with a full corridor reconstruction of 1st ave south from Franklin to E Grant. While the City is replacing the old infrastructure, significant investment in our transportation network will occur including a protected bikeway and pedestrian safety improvements. In addition, we are adding more green space along the corridor. Once completed in 2026 the new corridor from Lake Street into Downtown will be completed.
- CenterPoint Energy is progressing with gas service line installations between Franklin Avenue and the I‑94 bridge. North of the I‑94 bridge, their work has been completed. More information about CPE work can be found on the CenterPoint Project page.

Construction for the project will begin on April 27, 2026.
- Beginning April 23, 2026, the contractor will start staging the project site, which means you may notice increased activity such as equipment arriving, materials being delivered, and crews preparing the area.
- Starting April 27, 2026, project detours will go into effect. These detours will impact vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
- During this time, please expect:
- Detour routes and temporary traffic changes
- Movement of large construction equipment
- Ongoing material deliveries
- Regular contractor presence in the area
