Dear Neighbor,
Spring is here, and hopefully to stay! The Fulton Neighborhood Association is hosting The Great Winter Sendoff next Sunday, April 17 at Southwest High School from 12 PM-3PM. Join neighbors for a free event with live music, food, and fun to say goodbye to winter.
This was the final week of our condensed City Council structure with Committee of the Whole (COW) and City Council meetings – one of the many ways our city enterprise has been nimble in response to Operation Metro Surge. I’ve been grateful for the flexibility of staff and my colleagues but am looking forward to returning to our typical committee structure and the end of the marathon meetings.
As this is the beginning of a new term, the City Council voted on the approval of three important top-ranking public servants at yesterday’s City Council Meeting: City Attorney Kristyn Anderson, City Operations Officer Margaret Anderson Kelliher, and Office of Community Safety Commissioner Todd Barnette.
I supported the reappointment of all three of these experienced, key leaders. Collectively, they have adeptly responded to unspeakable tragedies in our city over the past few years. City Attorney Kristyn Anderson has been on the frontlines, leading a rapid response to the unprecedented ICE occupation in our city; COO Margaret Anderson Kelliher as our first ever City Operations Officer, has defined the position, transformed how our administration works under the new government structure and ensures that we deliver city services to our residents; and Commissioner Barnette has worked diligently to improve our city’s coordinated emergency response, which we saw in action after the tragic mass shooting at Annunciation School. Their historical knowledge, expertise, and leadership are indispensable, and I was proud to support them.
The reappointments of City Attorney Anderson and COO Anderson-Kelliher were both successful. Commissioner Todd Barnette was not supported by the majority of my colleagues (7-6), but Mayor Frey has vetoed this City Council action. I look forward to their continued service to our city and partnership with Council Members, City staff, and residents alike.
It’s important to share this because these are the leaders of our enterprise that aren’t elected. They are part of the professional, permanent bureaucracy that leads our city and oversee the core city services you rely on each day.
The Great Winter Sendoff Sunday, May 17th, 12 PM-3 PM Southwest High School - 3414 W 47th St.

Minneapolis is continuing to support renters and housing stability following Operation Metro Surge. While 30-day pre-eviction notice requirements remain the same, the City has expanded rental assistance to help residents stay in their homes.
Renters and property owners can find information about the 30-day pre-eviction notice and resources for renters on the City website.
There are funds available for renters to access. With $2 million in City funding, alongside a $1 million private funding donation from the Wilson Foundation, this emergency rental assistance will be distributed through existing systems to deliver the aid quickly.
Through the City’s partnership with Hennepin County, the relief will reach renters faster and make it easier for residents to access help when they need it most. These funds will not require an eviction filing for residents to seek access.
This assistance is designed to:
Help renters experiencing sudden financial hardship
Prevent evictions before they happen
Get support to residents quickly through trusted partners
The City will continue focusing on proven strategies that help renters stay in their homes while maintaining a stable housing market. We will also continue monitoring housing data closely and reassess policies if conditions change.
Yard waste season began the week of April 6. During yard waste season, we pick up yard waste every week on your garbage pickup day. There is no extra charge for us to collect properly prepared yard waste.
We accept leaves, brush and other yard trimmings. You should prepare yard waste and set it at your alley or curb next to your garbage cart by 6 a.m. on your garbage pickup day.
You can set yard waste out in reusable containers, compostable bags (paper or BPI certified compostable plastic) or bundles secured with string or twine.
The City is preparing to begin the next phase of work around George Floyd Square. This summer, street and infrastructure improvements will begin, marking an important milestone in a project shaped by significant community engagement.
We are moving forward with care — supporting remembrance, gathering and safety while honoring the significance of this place.
Construction Timeline
Work is expected to begin in June 2026, with substantial completion in 2027.
Community gathering space will remain available during construction, though locations may shift.
The project team is working with artists and community members to preserve, document and reinstall memorials and artworks.
Peoples’ Way
The City is continuing its review of the Peoples’ Way development applications, considering experience, financial qualifications, stewardship plans and community feedback. The Mayor and City Council will make the final decision on the developer and future owner.
Through the Neighborhood Traffic Calming program, Minneapolis Public Works is finding ways to make your neighborhood streets safer and reduce risky driving. We have identified several areas for traffic calming projects in 2026.
We want to hear your concerns about traffic safety near the projects. You can provide feedback in several ways.

The Minneapolis City Council voted to move forward with a plan to help small businesses impacted by Operation Metro Surge.
The $7 million Small Business Resiliency Fund was approved by Mayor Jacob Frey and the City Council in February and outlined by the Community Planning and Economic Development (CPED) department on March 24. It will provide license fee relief, support for events and activations in commercial areas, cultural market grants and more, all in an effort to recover from the $81 million in restaurant and small business losses as a result of the federal immigration enforcement earlier this year.
CPED staff designed the fund to get money out to businesses quickly and without too many hurdles. By City estimates, the Surge cost Minneapolis businesses $81 million in lost revenue as many temporarily closed to avoid further impact.
The resiliency fund is divided into two categories: direct financial relief, and activation and marketing support, both aimed at stabilizing small businesses and driving customers back to commercial corridors.
One of the best parts of my job is getting to meet with my constituents, learn more about you and hear your questions, concerns, hopes and dreams for our shared community.
If you'd like to schedule a time to meet with me, send me an e-mailand my staff will help get it scheduled. Please let me know what you'd like to talk about and a convenient place to meet—a coffee shop, a park, your home, my office, etc. I try to reserve Fridays for constituent meetings, but can work them in other times, as necessary, too.
