Community leaders from across the city are speaking out against Mayor Frey’s proposal to spend $40 million on a training center for the police. This week, I spoke alongside Council Members Stevenson and Chughtai at a press conference featuring Nekima Levy Armstrong, renowned lawyer and social justice leader, and Jaylani Hussein, Executive Director of the Council on American Islamic Relations, in their opposition to the project. Community organization New Justice Project also spoke out against the project. All these leaders shared a clear understanding that our City should invest $40 million into basic needs to stabilize an uplift our community, not MPD’s wish list. I attended the Winter Meeting of the East Bank Neighborhood Partnership. EBNP is the City’s newest and largest neighborhood association, following the merger of SE Como, Marcy-Holmes, Mid-City Industrial, University, Dinkytown, and Nicollet Island/East Bank neighborhood associations. The neighborhood association is incredibly active, bringing together diverse residents on everything from community gardening to mutual aid. My office partnered with the University of Minnesota’s Undergraduate Student Government on a panel called Protecting Your Neighbors: Advocacy and Community. We discussed understanding your rights as immigrants and allies, learning about immigration experiences, building awareness and community support, and taking action through local advocacy and campus engagement. Thank you to the organizers, panelists and students who were part of this incredibly useful event.
I want to uplift a mutual aid project by Ward 2 residents:
We are a group of neighbors that have been working with several families over the last few months who have been impacted by the ICE occupation. These folks are struggling, some having lost family, some cases still sheltering at home to stay safe, and all their lives have been thrown into chaos. We want to do what we can to make our neighbors lives just a bit easier by helping provide rent and groceries for them. Please donate to help our neighbors meet their urgent needs.

The Como Ave SE Corridor Improvement Project (2029) is starting public engagement. The first phase of engagement is intended to introduce the retrofit project to the community, and discuss existing street conditions with residents and businesses along the street. You can get involved by taking an online survey or attending an Open House.
