As many of you may have heard, earlier this morning a federal ICE agent shot and killed a 37-year-old woman near the intersection of 33rd Street and Portland Avenue. The Minneapolis Police Department secured the scene and assisted in preserving evidence. The investigation has now been turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, who will jointly lead the inquiry.
I want to be clear: the presence of federal immigration enforcement agents in our city is creating fear, instability, and harm, and is making our community less safe.
Mayor Frey and City leadership are demanding that ICE leave Minneapolis and the State of Minnesota and cease actions that sow chaos and harm in our neighborhoods. The Trump administration’s agenda is rooted in fear and disruption, not in public safety. We stand firmly with our immigrant and refugee communities—know that you have our full support.
We recognize and uphold the public’s constitutional right to free expression. We urge residents and visitors alike to show the world the best of Minneapolis by demonstrating peacefully and lawfully. It is critical that we do not take the bait or allow others to mischaracterize who we are as a city.
If you choose to protest or demonstrate, please do so peacefully and within the law. Protecting everyone’s safety while allowing communities to be heard is essential.
Know your rights and responsibilities:
• Protesters have the right to peacefully demonstrate on sidewalks and in public spaces, including carrying signs and chanting.
• Protesters may not enter freeways, block streets, throw objects, engage in violence or criminal activity, enter private property (including commercial spaces) without permission, or use fireworks or weapons.
• Unlawful activity will not be tolerated.
We urge the public to remain calm and to follow official City of Minneapolis social media channels for timely and accurate information, including updates on how the City is preparing for potential federal or military activity.
