Ward 11 Update Regarding the ICE-Involved Shooting in South Minneapolis

News from Council Member Jamison Whiting

Ward 11 Neighbors,

This is not how I hoped to first address you, but actions by this heartless Federal Administration today demand immediate and unwavering condemnation.

This morning, federal ICE agents ended the life of one of our neighbors, in our City.

To the family and friends of the victim, we are so deeply sorry. Your loss has left Minneapolis heartbroken and horrified. We will do everything possible to ensure justice.

This kind of violence should never happen – period. The Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Frey are united in calling for ICE to leave our City immediately. We stand in full support of the immigrants, refugees, peaceful protestors, and all of our neighbors who make this City the place we call home. We implore the Federal Administration to conclude their destructive deployment, and to actually prioritize public safety and human decency, by immediately withdrawing ICE from Minneapolis.

To our neighbors, today is a moment to further prove the character of Minneapolis. Looking out for each other is what we do, and I encourage each and every Ward 11 resident to consider how we will peacefully step up in the coming days. We must overwhelm violence with an equally strong display of unity and love.

  • If you or someone you know is in need of support, whether legal guidance, crisis assistance, or information on your rights, or you want to help and don’t know how, you can find a list of City resources below and additional resources here.
  • If you would like to join neighbors in mourning tonight, there will be a vigil at the corner of East 34th Street and Portland Ave S (right now, 5pm). I, along with many of my Council colleagues, will be there in solidarity and I would love to see you.

It is an honor to serve as your Council Member. Please don't hesitate to reach out and please stay safe.

All my love

Council Member Jamison Whiting
