Turning Point USA at the University of Minnesota

Dear Community,

I am reaching out with an update related to an event taking place this evening at the University of Minnesota organized by The Turning Point USA (TPU) called, “The American Comeback Tour”. Charlie Kirk, the founder, was killed almost two weeks ago at the first stop of this tour in Utah.

When this event was initially announced, my office did hear concerns from students on campus. In light of the death of Charlie Kirk, many, including myself, were surprised that this event was still being put on. I also am aware that many classes today took place virtually as faculty were advised by their respective department leaders due to safety concerns related to this event.

I want to recognize that this event stirred deep anxiety among many Ward 2 residents, particularly those belonging to groups who have often been the focus of attacks and bigoted rhetoric from Charlie Kirk and Turning Point USA. There is widespread documentation of the hate speech Charlie Kirk and Turning Point espoused and understandably members of the community had safety concerns about the presence of TPU supporters on campus and whether they would wander into our surrounding communities, such as Cedar Riverside, which is largely Somali.

I have been in conversation with the University of Minnesota as well as MPD and I have learned that while there is a campus safety plan in place, such does not exist for neighborhoods surrounding the East Bank campus where the event will be held. I have reached out to some community leaders to make them aware that those attending the Turning Point event may be circulating throughout our neighborhoods and to relay any concerns directly to MPD and my office. I will continue to be in conversation with the University of Minnesota as well as Council Member Osman who also represents the Cedar Riverside area.

Hate has no place in Minneapolis, and I am deeply frustrated that the University of Minnesota has attempted to normalize a group that is tied to hate-filled ideology and extremism. The UMN has denied, penalized, and criminalized both students and faculty for using their voices to protest against the genocide in Palestine, but is now providing a platform for a group that has targeted many groups our neighbors belong to, such as Somalis, LGBTQ+ people, and immigrants. Beyond hypocrisy, tonight’s actions by the university are risking people’s safety and that is unacceptable.

I will be monitoring tonight’s event and counter protests. I will also be sharing more information about further conversations I will be having with the university. If you observe suspicious behavior, are threatened, or witness safety concerns, please immediately call 911.
