A message from Council President Elliott Payne

Hello neighbors,

I hope all Ward 1 kids and families are having a great first day of school. I know today must have been tough sending your kids to school as we're all still reeling from last week's mass shooting at Annunciation. Thank you to everyone who is  showing up for our children on this tough day.

I'm glad that Governor Walz will be calling a special session to encourage lawmakers to vote on a package of gun control measures. On Friday, myself and Council Members Koski & Palmisano who represent the area, along with Council Member Chowdhury who is our IGR Chair, sent a joint letter to Governor Walz asking him to take this step and we appreciate how he and so many other leaders have shown up for our City this last week. Now is the time to make your voice heard and contact your legislators in support of changes to prevent this from ever happening again in our City.

I have office hours tonight from 5-7 PM at Marshall Terrace Park. The weather should be all clear by then so I hope you come join me. I also have community 1-1s this Thursday morning at Yellowbird. There's still lots of time slots available and you can sign up for a timeslot below.

Best,

Elliott

Start planning for Welcoming Week Sept. 12-21

Welcoming Week 2025 takes place from Sept. 12 to 21, and this year’s theme is Stories We Share.

The City of Minneapolis is a Welcoming City. Each year we celebrate Welcoming Week, an annual opportunity for communities across the country to celebrate community diversity, promote mutual understanding and foster a sense of belonging for all. Because Citizenship Day and Constitution Day take place during Welcoming Week, the City also hosts annual events focusing on the importance of U.S. citizenship and how to apply to become a citizen through naturalization.

2025 events

Check out the City of Minneapolis Welcoming Week page, where you’ll find Welcoming Week events to join.

Show your support

All of us make the City of Minneapolis a more Welcoming City. For Welcoming Week 2025, you can show your support by joining a community- or City-sponsored event, sharing information about the City’s All Are Welcome Here campaign, and so much more.

Twin Cities immigration forum

The cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul host a biweekly immigration forum to offer immigration-related updates to the community. Topics include:

  • Federal immigration news and resources.
  • City, community and advocacy organization updates.
  • Other topics important to immigrant, refugee and new American communities.

Find dates on the events calendar. Get a link to the meeting series by emailing the Minneapolis Office of Immigrant & Refugee Affairs.

City’s first ‘medical clinic on wheels’ visiting neighborhoods

The City of Minneapolis’ first-ever Mobile Medical Unit is officially on the streets, bringing important healthcare services, addiction treatment and recovery resources, and connections to primary preventive care directly to neighborhoods with limited access to healthcare.

The vehicle will offer care in a private, respectful space. Services will include:

  • Basic health screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar)
  • Medication consultation
  • Wound care
  • Mental health counseling and referrals
  • Youth health services (physical exams, dental care, wellness checks)
  • Medications for opioid use disorder
  • Vaccinations

Register – or re-register – your bicycle serial number

The City is switching its bicycle serial number registry. In the future, Minneapolis Police will check the serial numbers of recovered bikes on Bike Index, the largest bicycle registration service in the United States. This change offers City staff a wider pool of data to help return missing bicycles. Take a few minutes today to register (or re-register) your bicycle serial numbers.

Public, free and national serial number registries make it easier for police departments anywhere to return recovered bicycles. It's also easier for bike buyers to know they’re buying from a legal owner. If you’re buying a bicycle from a stranger, check the bicycle's serial number against a public index before you buy to confirm that it's not stolen. It's harder for thieves to sell stolen bicycles when we use these registries.

Learn more about bicycle registration on the City website, including where to find your bike's serial number. Find out what to do if your bicycle is lost or stolen on the City website.
