Dear Neighbor,
We are officially beginning the season of neighborhood gatherings, summer jams, and fall festivals. I'm looking forward to National Night Out tonight, and was up late last night baking for my own. I’ll be visiting as many parties as I can throughout the 13th Ward. To be candid- I’m not someone who thrives on parties. I’ve always been in the middle of a spectrum between extrovert and introvert. So I get it for those whom it takes energy to choose to go out to their block party. I tend to prefer being a helper of organizing it- it’s my way to contribute. For me to get out after a long day at City Hall to hit block after block on a night like tonight- if I can do this, you can too.
The individual conversations that I sometimes have to encourage myself into really do fill me up. With my family’s hectic schedule, I fear we are constantly in a rush. But I’m always so appreciative of neighbors that literally jump out to welcome neighbors! And on National Night Out, we have a unique opportunity to connect with neighbors we don’t always talk to, meet the new person on the block, and better understand one another. We all live together in overlapping ways, and it makes our city safer and more fun to be connected. I learn new things about someone I know, or I get to meet new people in a relaxed setting. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Tomorrow, I’ll be meeting with business owners, MPD staff, partners at Hennepin County, and supportive housing services providers to address concerns about crime and safety in the 54th and Lyndale area. Our goal is to work together to create a safety plan for the intersection.
The next 13th Ward Neighborhood Safety Walk will be around Bde Maka Ska, a walk we previously had to cancel due to inclement weather. I am hoping to find residents who are willing to start regular walk groups in their own neighborhoods, with the goal of having one in each neighborhood in the ward. Come enjoy the beautiful weather and learn more about starting a Neighborhood Safety Club!
13th Ward Neighborhood Safety Walk Bde Maka Ska Parkway | Meet at Thomas Beach Thursday, August 14 | 5:30-7:00 PM
The Lake Harriet Parkway Paving Project will begin in 2026 and continue through 2027. Public Works will repave the parkway using a full depth reclamation process, which extends its longevity, decreases project costs, and reuses existing material to be more environmentally friendly. This process takes about 4-5 weeks.
2026 work includes pedestrian ramp upgrades around Lake Harriet and repaving the northern portion of the parkway, from W 42nd St. to Roseway Rd.
2027 work includes repaving the southern and remaining portion of the parkway, from Roseway Rd. to W 42nd St.
The City will deploy five traffic safety cameras to begin automated enforcement of speed limits this fall. The traffic camera safety pilot program is a key part of the City’s Vision Zero initiative. Vision Zero aims to eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries on Minneapolis streets. It pursues a future where everyone can move through our city safely, efficiently and equitably.
Camera Locations
Third Street North near First Avenue North in Downtown
Fremont Avenue North near West Broadway Avenue in Near North
18th Avenue Northeast near Central Avenue Northeast in Northeast
Chicago Avenue near Franklin Avenue East in Ventura Village
Nicollet Avenue near West 46th Street in Kingfield and Tangletown
Traffic cameras may only be used for traffic enforcement and capture a picture or video of the back of the vehicle. They’re not allowed to take pictures or video of people.
Traffic safety cameras are meant to shift driver behavior and save lives, not generate revenue. As required by state law, any revenue from fines will cover implementation costs and investments in other traffic safety and calming measures.
I have communicated the 13th ward areas where I feel these cameras could be particularly effective. The requirements of the program are fairly strict and do not fit many of them, which are: use previous crash/fatality data, must be within 2000 feet of a school, and be on a city street (versus county road). They also are distributed throughout the city. Areas in our ward on 54th St near Lyndale and 49th near Xerxes are in the list of future locations.
Recent reports of car break-ins and damage to vehicles in Minneapolis and surrounding cities over the last two weeks serve as a reminder to take simple precautions to protect your vehicle and valuables.
Keep Your Car Safe:
Always take your keys with you.
Lock your doors and windows.
Park in well-lit, busy areas.
Use an engine lock or install a GPS tracker.
Do not leave valuables such as bags or electronics in your car.
Residents play a crucial role in preventing crime. If you see something suspicious, call 911 right away. Try to give a clear description of the people and cars and where they went.
Report Stolen Vehicles
Call 911 and your insurance company right away if your vehicle is stolen. If your car’s found, let them know immediately.
Pedestrian ramp upgrades have begun this year, south of 50th Street. Pavement resurfacing will begin in 2026 including replacement of select curbs and gutters.
Join the project team for office hours:
Every Tuesday from 2:00pm-4:00pm August 12-September 16 Pershing Park Recreation Center - 3523 W 48th St.
Copper wire theft repairs continue throughout the City of Minneapolis. Public Works has completed repairs along Lake Harriet Parkway, and they expect to address outages along Minnehaha Parkway later this fall.
Please know that timing will depend on conditions in the field (new thefts, difficulty of repair), urgency of non-wire theft repairs, and other issues that may arise during construction.
One of the best parts of my job is getting to meet with my constituents, learn more about you and hear your questions, concerns, hopes and dreams for our shared community.
If you'd like to schedule a time to meet with me, send me an e-mailand my staff will help get it scheduled. Please let me know what you'd like to talk about and a convenient place to meet—a coffee shop, a park, your home, my office, etc. I try to reserve Fridays for constituent meetings, but can work them in other times, as necessary, too.
