Community Wins at City Hall and Summer Events

Council Member Aisha Chughtai

June 20, 2025

Hi Neighbors,

We’ve moved back to City Hall! After an extended time in our temporary building, while City Hall got some much-needed updates, the Ward 10 office is now fully operating out of City Hall. The Council Chambers are getting the finishing touches done so for now Council Meetings are still being conducted at the Public Service Center, where we’ve been holding our meetings over the last year. We look forward to welcoming you all into the space!

Highlights from City Hall

Rise Up Center Receives Great Street Grant

Directly across Hennepin Avenue from Ward 10, is the Rise Up Center. An exciting training and opportunity center to help train a diverse workforce in the green energy economy, construction trades, and other unionized high paying jobs. During the last Council Meeting, we unanimously authorized the Rise Up Center for a Great Streets Grant for pre-development funding. It's great to see this come to fruition after Council Member Cashman and I co-authored an amendment to ensure funding for the project in last years budget. You can learn more about this incredible project here.

Dance Agenda at Eat Street Crossing

For the last few weeks my office has had the privilege of learning more about Dance Agenda, a Minneapolis event production company that curates inclusive, music-driven experiences by bringing international touring acts and championing local talent. Im thrilled that at this weeks Council, I was able to work with City staff and help them receive an Amplified Sound Permit. They are collaborating with Eat Street Crossing to bring touring acts and live music to Eat Street this summer on July 12 and August 1!

News and Notices

35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

On Wednesday, July 30, from 5-8pm at the Public Service Building, Room 100, the City will be honoring 35 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The event will feature a documentary and panel as well as the unveiling of the disability pride flag.

The ADA, signed into law in 1990, is a critical civil rights law for people with disabilities. The law bans discrimination in all aspects of public life. This includes discrimination in City programs, services and buildings.

This anniversary celebration honors the importance of this law and the local leaders who have improved countless lives in and around the city. You can find more details about the event here, I hope you can attend!

Hazardous Waste Collection Event

Hennepin County is hosting community collection events for County residents to properly dispose of unwanted garden and household hazardous waste. If you have hazardous waste to dispose of, you can go to South High School (3131 19th Avenue South) on Friday, August 8 and Saturday, August 9, from 9am-3pm. You can learn more information about the event and review safety guidelines on the Hennepin County Website.

Construction

I want to notify you all of upcoming construction in the coming weeks.

The intersection of Lake and Nicollet saw construction begin on Monday, July 7, the street will be closed for up to six weeks. This is to perform critically needed updates and repairs to vital utilities such as water and storm sewer, as well as pavement work. Digital message boards were placed on Monday on Lake St informing road users of this work.

Below is a picture shared by CPED of where detours are set to be during this time.

With construction comes many questions and concerns, and fortunately, the project team is offering a weekly stakeholder meeting via Microsoft Teams, starting July 13th at 10:00am, to give an overview of the construction as it progresses. You can utilize this link to join the meeting.

In addition to the weekly stakeholder meetings, if you have immediate questions, you can contact the Project engineer, Adam Hayow at adam.hayow@minneapolismn.gov.

The Green Infrastructure Restoration Project is also in progress on Franklin Avenue between Hennepin Avenue South and Lyndale Avenue South has started and is projected to continue until Friday, July 18. This is a brief project working to remove the green erosion control blanket that is currently in place and preserve plants, install mulch, and add native plants and grasses. The road will remain open, but please anticipate delays if you are driving or taking the bus. One side of the sidewalk and bike trail will be closed for work, so for those of you biking or walking for transportation please know one side remains open but you may also experience delays. If you have immediate questions, you can contact the project team by emailing the Construction Engineer, Michael Richie, at michael.richie@minneapolismn.gov.

2025 Trans Equity Summit

Save the date for the City of Minneapolis’ 10th Trans Equity Summit on Monday, August 11thThis year’s summit will be held at the McNamara Alumni Center's Memorial Hall, located at 200 Oak St. SE. The theme of this year’s summit is Trans Unity and Intergenerational Power: Strengthening the Future by Honoring Our Past. This is a free all-day summit that is open to the public, and I would encourage all who are interested and able to attend!

Since 2014 the City of Minneapolis has hosted the Minneapolis Trans Equity Summit: an annual gathering that pushes for the social, legal, and health issues critical to the transgender community. The Trans Equity Summit is an event unique to Minneapolis, designed by, for, and with our Trans and gender non-conforming community. Programming will include breakout sessions, a job and resource fair, and healing offerings. Space will be available for community care, for collective witnessing, and for trans and gender-non-conforming folks to find or further assert their places and power.

Registration is now open, don’t forget to sign up!

Upcoming Community Events and Activities

  • The Lyn-Lake Street Art Series is celebrating it’s eighth year! The art series started as a way to celebrate the rich graffiti and street art culture in the Twin Cities. It has successfully brought many neighbors, visitors, and communities together to experience the creation of murals by artists. Starting Thursday July 10, through Sunday July 13, you can find many artists actively working on murals in our corridor. This is a great time to walk or roll through Lyn-Lake, check out the local art, and stop in at incredible local businesses!
  • I talked in a previous update about the Wedge Cat Tour; with that in mind I wanted to invite you all to another uniquely Minneapolis, and uniquely Ward 10 treasure, Uptown Porch Fest. Uptown Porch Fest is a novel way to explore the Wedge neighborhood while also hearing from local musical acts, support small businesses and celebrate the rich history of the neighborhood. Come check it out this year on Saturday, August 16, from 1-5pm
  • Save the Date for Hennepin Open Streets! Join the Uptown Association, at Hennepin Open Streets on September 20. Open Streets Minneapolis transforms major City streets into car-free places for one day, and is something I look forward to every year. I’ll be sure to send more details as we get closer to the event, but save it in your calendars now!
  • Looking for fresh produce, music and food trucks? The Uptown Farmers Market has you covered! Every Thursday from 4pm-8pm at W Lake and Girard.
  •  Minneapolis leads the country in National Night Out (NNO) participation! National Night Out takes place every year on the first Tuesday of August and is celebrated throughout the city and the country. Thousands gather at block parties, potlucks, community fairs and other community building events. Keep an eye on what will be happening in your block as we get closer to the event, and you can check out the Neighborhood Organizations’ Calendars: East Bde Maka Ska, South Uptown, the Wedge, Whittier Alliance.

I was so excited to be able to fill this Newsletter with community specific policies, updates, and opportunities. I’m looking forward to all the upcoming summer events that help build a welcoming and equitable city where everyone can thrive. Our neighborhoods are a strength of our community – I encourage you to check out events taking place in your area, opportunities to get involved through your Neighborhood Association and community groups, or summer opportunities at our local parks and libraries! I’ll be seeing you all soon, and hope you have a great weekend.

In Solidarity,

Aisha Chughtai
