At around 2:08 p.m. Monday, gunfire broke out inside the park. Witnesses reported a vehicle driving through the park and two others nearby when shots rang out. A nearby resident heard cries for help and discovered Amir, suffering from a gunshot wound. That neighbor did what so many of us would hope we’d have the courage to do. He loaded Amir into his car and rushed for help. He flagged down an officer near Penn and Dowling, who immediately began life-saving efforts. Despite every effort from police, fire, and EMS, Amir was pronounced dead at the scene.
I want to thank that brave neighbor (Troy), the officer (Lieutenant Hand) who fought to save Amir’s life, and the first responders who acted swiftly and selflessly. I’m also deeply grateful to community groups like A Mother’s Love, 21 Days of Peace, We Push for Peace, and every resident who showed up to manage the chaos and care for one another in such a heartbreaking moment.
Let me be very clear: No parent should have to bury their child. This cycle of grief is unacceptable, and we must demand justice and accountability. Our children deserve a future free from gun violence, where they can grow up in safety.
Please keep Amir’s family in your thoughts and prayers. And if you know something, say something. This family deserves justice. Our community deserves peace. And our kids deserve to live.
With heartbreak and hope,
