Update on the Shootings at Boom Island Park

I want to give all of you an update on the shootings that occurred at Boom Island Park over the weekend:

  • There have been ongoing issues at the park for several years now. in 2022 there was a gunfight with over 100 shots fired with multiple victims.
  • This past Friday evening, officers responded to a report of shots fired and found evidence that an individual had been shot in the parking lot.
  • Yesterday, officers again responded to a shots fired call and found a chaotic scene with a large group of people. One person was killed, four were injured by gunfire, and one was injured from being run over with a car. Officers found well over 100 casings from this incident.
  • In conversations with staff from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, I have requested that the parking lot be closed daily at 8pm until it is determined to be unnecessary. During that period, I will continue to work with park officials on long-term safety strategies. Our parks should be a safe and welcoming space for all, not scenes of violence.

Your neighbor,

Michael
