May 30, 2025 (MINNEAPOLIS) – One year ago today, Officer Jamal Mitchell made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the city of Minneapolis.   

On May 30, 2024, Officer Jamal Mitchell responded without hesitation to a call for help -- two people shot on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue. While on route, Mitchell stopped short about two blocks from the reported address to help a pair of people lying in the road that he thought were the victims. True to his character, Mitchell rushed toward one of them, but that person turned out to be the armed suspect and opened fire, fatally wounding Mitchell.   

Today, we remember Officer Mitchell’s courage, sacrifice, and service. While Officer Mitchell was an exceptional officer, he was not the exception. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who serve and in the community he gave everything to protect.

“Officer Jamal Mitchell was the very best of Minneapolis,” said Mayor Jacob Frey. “A devoted partner, a loving dad, and an officer who, even in his final moments, was willing to run toward danger to help someone else. Today, we honor his memory and stand with his family, recognizing the profound impact he had on our city. His courage and selflessness will not be forgotten.”  

A banner bearing Jamal Mitchell’s name has been added to the MPD flag alongside the names of every officer who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving Minneapolis. The MPD will be honoring Officer Mitchell today with a private ceremony. MPD will also be honoring Officer Mitchell with a memorial dedication ceremony.
