arbor day 2025

Dear Neighbor,

Spring is here! I was honored to celebrate and speak at the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) Forestry Department's Annual Arbor Day Celebration. At this event, the Forestry Department planted more than 60 of the 130 total trees that will be planted at Kenny Park this year.

I have spent a good portion of my adult life dedicated to trees through my time on the Linden Hills Neighborhood Council, the Minneapolis Tree Commission and my long-standing partnership with Green Cities Accord. I enjoy trees for their beauty and for their shade, but I consider the most important function of trees to be their ability to reduce the effects of climate change. Trees are able to do this important work by removing carbon dioxide from our atmosphere and storing it in their bark, leaves, and roots. We have great organizations who partner with Minneapolis Parks and Recreation to reduce carbon and plant more trees.

You can be part of building and preserving our city's tree canopy for generations to come:

  • Have space in your boulevard? Minneapolis residents and property owners are welcome to request a new boulevard tree by calling 612-313-7710 or emailing forestry@minneapolisparks.org.
  • In partnership with Brewing a Better Forest, residents can Adopt a Tree and water it weekly throughout the summer. There are thousands of trees available!
  • Mark your calendar for next year's Spring City Trees Sale. Every year, the City sells low-cost trees to increase the city's tree canopy. Each tree is $30 and includes one bag of mulch and information about caring for your trees.

I hope you'll join me in planting and protecting trees, finding ways to make Minneapolis greener, and working together to ensure we have a climate resilient city.

Yours in Service,

Linea

Work on the Linden Hills Replica Canopy Continues!

LH Replica Canopy

The Minnesota Streetcar Museum is currently building a replica of the original 1912 canopy on the newly exposed original concrete platform. The new canopy will be about half as long as the original and will provide needed shade for passengers and crew members.

The canopy arrived in red primer, so volunteers held a five hour painting party to apply black paint. Pictured above are Eric Werner, Pat Cosgrove, Augie Lassig, Miles Anderson, Tom May and Aaron Isaacs behind the camera. Bill Graham also participated.

Safe & Thriving Communities Workgroup Graphic

The Office of Community Safety is seeking 21 community members to join a work group. Members will advise the city in its efforts to improve safety services in a comprehensive way. The work group will also work on engagement opportunities to connect with community members.

The goal of this group is to provide feedback as the city develops its community safety ecosystem. This includes:

  • Prevention services
  • Non-police response services
  • Restoration services
  • Safety processes and procedures
  • Community safety centers

MSP Runway Closures

Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) has scheduled runway maintenance projects for the spring and summer of 2025 to ensure the continued safety and efficiency of airport operations. These projects will involve temporary runway closures, which may affect flight patterns and noise levels in surrounding communities.

  • Phase One: April 14 - May 23
  • Phase Two: August 18 - September 26

At times, airport construction and maintenance impact typical runway use. These activities periodically require temporary closures of runways at MSP to ensure the safety of construction crews and aircraft. Air Traffic Control (ATC) will continue to consider the factors of runway availability, wind and operational efficiency and utilize the priority Runway Use System (RUS) to direct aircraft over more noise-compatible, less-populated residential areas when feasible.

Residents may notice a temporary change or increase in activity over their neighborhood, depending on the flight patterns and runway configurations chosen by the FAA during the upcoming construction. When the runway construction is complete, and the runways are reopened, the FAA will return MSP to its pre-construction operational patterns.

Runway use information and flight activity are available on the MAC FlightTracker. Information about runway closures at MSP is available here

Meet with Council Member Palmisano

One of the best parts of my job is getting to meet with my constituents, learn more about you and hear your questions, concerns, hopes and dreams for our shared community.

If you'd like to schedule a time to meet with me, send me an e-mail and my staff will help get it scheduled. Please let me know what you'd like to talk about and a convenient place to meet—a coffee shop, a park, your home, my office, etc. I try to reserve Fridays for constituent meetings, but can work them in other times, as necessary, too.
