Dear Community,
I am deeply saddened and disturbed to be sharing the news that an international graduate student at the University of Minnesota has been arrested by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The University shared this information in an email to students, faculty and staff earlier this evening. President Cunningham affirmed that the University had no prior knowledge of this incident and did not share any information with federal authorities before it occurred.
This frightening reality underscores the need for the City of Minneapolis, University of Minnesota, and all local governments to clearly and unambiguously condemn the Trump administration’s cruel and racist attacks, and invest resources into protecting vulnerable residents.
I remain committed to supporting residents with every tool available. I led Council to allocate additional funds in the 2025 Budget for free immigration legal services for residents, out of recognition that many in our communities were unfortunately likely to be facing increased attacks in the coming year. I have asked MPD leadership to establish clear disciplinary criteria for any officer who violates the City’s separation ordinance and uses their position to enforce immigration laws. If you have other ways you believe my office can be helpful during this upsetting time, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
I encourage everyone to attend the rally and press conference on Monday about protecting University workers from Trump’s attacks. This event is co-hosted by a University staff union and the Graduate Labor Union. Read more on AFSCME’s social media.
