1st Ave S Reconstruction - Project overview

The Minneapolis Public Works Department plans to reconstruct 1st Ave. S from Lake St. to Franklin Ave., including replacing the Midtown Greenway Bridge. In addition to new pavement, the project will include new sidewalks, an off-street bicycle facility, updated safety features, sanitary and storm main replacement, and green stormwater infrastructure.


Construction update

1st Ave. S closure

Segments of 1st Ave. S will continue to be closed through the winter. Drivers will need to follow the posted detour ­­­­­­­­­­­route.

  • 1st Ave. S is closed from 19th St. to 22nd St. and 24th St. to 27th St.
  • Vehicle detour route: Lake St., Lyndale Ave. and Franklin Ave.
  • Bicycle detour route: Lake St., Blaisdell Ave. and Nicollet Ave., and Franklin Ave.

Traffic control update

  • Franklin Ave. is open in both directions.
  • 1st Ave. S., between 22nd and just north of Franklin Ave. remains closed. Access to the will be maintained from the Franklin Ave. side for local residents.
  • 1st Ave. S., between 22nd and 24th is a temporary two-way street to keep access to driveways.
  • The intersection of First Ave. S. and 22nd Street will be closed Tuesday through Friday next week.
  • There will be a water valve relocation at the NW corner of 24th St and 1st Ave S. Access will be maintained on 24th St and 1st Ave S. This will take place during the week of February 4
  • The intersection of First Ave. S. and 25th Street will close on Monday and remain closed through the beginning of March.
  • Storm main work continues on the north half of the 26th St. E. intersection t. One lane of through traffic will be maintained on 26th St. E. during this storm main work. The intersection is anticipated to open next Friday, pending weather. When this work is complete at 26th St and  the work at 22nd St is complete, storm main work will start at 24th St.  This is anticipated to start during the week of February 10 and is anticipated to last for three weeks.
  • 1st Ave S, between 26th and 27th St. is open to local traffic.
  • The bike lanes along 1st Ave. remain closed between 27th St. and 19th St. E.

What to expect

  • Sanitary main installation is ongoing between 26th and 24th St. E.
  • Sanitary main replacement is ongoing between 22nd and Franklin Ave.
  • Storm sewer installation will be taking place between 27th and Franklin
  • Select water work will be taking place between 27th and Franklin. This includes valve replacement and hydrant replacement.
  • In the coming weeks, the intersection at 24th Street and 1st Avenue South will close for additional water and storm main work. More details will be included in future updates as the schedule solidifies.

First Ave. S Reconstruction field hours

The project team was available to answer questions weekly from June through November. For the winter months, field hours will move to a monthly basis. Weekly meetings will resume in the spring. Come visit us to learn more:
