December 28, 2024 (MINNEAPOLIS) Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said that Minneapolis police officers arrested a 58-year-old man for a fatal stabbing that occurred near a bus shelter at Nicollet Ave and S 5th St.
On December 23, 2024, at approximately 11:52 p.m., officers from the 1st Precinct and Metro Transit Police located the injured man in his 30s on the ground and bleeding from potentially life-threatening stab wounds. Offices provided immediate medical aid. The injured man was transported to Hennepin Healthcare Hospital. On December 27th, MPD was notified that the man later died at the hospital.
Officers tracked the suspect’s movements on camera until he was located and arrested near Colfax Ave S and Lake St at approximately 12:21 a.m. The arrested man was transported to Hennepin Health Hospital for evaluation of an injury that had occurred prior to his arrest. He was later booked into the Hennepin County Jail. He was released pending charges from jail on December 26th.
On December 27th, 58-year-old Joseph Davis was formally charged with 1st Degree Assault and an arrest warrant was issued. MPD arrested Davis on December 27th and he remains in custody at Hennepin County Jail. Updated charges will be submitted to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.
Preliminary information indicates that an altercation in the street near a bus stop escalated to a stabbing.
MPD homicide investigators responded to the scene to begin determining the sequence of events that led up to the shooting.
“I am grateful to the officers and investigators who worked quickly to bring justice for the victim and his family,” said Chief O’Hara. “While nothing can bring back this man, I hope that our work brings some sense of justice for his family during this difficult time.”
Minneapolis Forensic Scientists responded to process the scene.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the identity of the deceased individual along with the cause and manner of death.
