1st Ave S Reconstruction project overview

The Minneapolis Public Works Department plans to reconstruct 1st Ave. S from Lake St. to Franklin Ave., including replacing the Midtown Greenway Bridge. In addition to new pavement, the project will include new sidewalks, an off-street bicycle facility, updated safety features, sanitary and storm main replacement, and green stormwater infrastructure.


Construction update

Midtown Greenway Closed Nov. 1 through Nov. 9

The Midtown Greenway closed November 1st for crews to begin final restoration of the trail. The detour goes from Nicollet Ave. to 5th Ave. S using 28th St. The greenway is anticipated to open on November 9 but is subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. 

Closure

 

1st Ave. S closure

First Ave. S will continue to be closed through the fall and drivers will need to follow the posted detour ­­­­­­­­­­­route.

  • First Ave. S is closed between 24th St. and Lake St. through the fall
  • Vehicle detour route: Lake St., Lyndale Ave. and Franklin Ave.
  • Bicycle detour route: Lake St., Blaisdell Ave. and Nicollet Ave., and Franklin Ave.

What went on this past week

  • Grading and sidewalk work began on the south side of the bridge over the Midtown Greenway. Grading began at 27th St E.
  • Lighting system installation continued between Cecil Newman Lane and 27th St E.
  • Crews continue to replace the sanitary main between 27th and 26th St E.
  • Sanitary main installation continues between 25th St E. and 24th St E. The 25th St intersection is closed, and the 24th St E. intersection is open.
  • Select sidewalk work was completed between 24th to Franklin Ave, on the east side of the street.
  • Sanitary main replacement began between Franklin Ave E and 22nd St E. Franklin Ave E is temporarily closed for two weeks to replace sewer pipe. 1st Ave S, between 19th St and Franklin has one northbound lane open.  1st Ave S, between 22nd and Franklin, is closed just south of Franklin Ave. This block is a temporary two-way street to keep access to driveways
  • Curb and gutter installation is ongoing between28th St and Cecil Newman Ln.

What to expect in the coming weeks

  • Expect additional noise, dust, and vibration as crews continue to work on the 1st Ave. bridge.
  • The bike lanes along 1st Ave. will be closed between Lake St and 19th St E.
  • Sanitary main installation will continue between 27th and 26th St E. Sanitary main preparation work will be ongoing between 26th and 25th St E.
  • Sanitary main installation will commence between 26th and 25th St E. Sanitary main preparation work will be ongoing between 25th and 24th St E.
  • 24th St E will have a lane shift with both east and west bound traffic still maintained.
  • Sanitary main replacement continues between 19th to 22nd St E. Franklin Ave E remains open. 1st Ave S, between 19th St and Franklin has one northbound lane open.  1st Ave S, between 22nd and Franklin, is closed just south of Franklin Ave. This block is a temporary two-way street to keep access to driveways.
  • Curb and gutter, sidewalk, and bike facility installation are ongoing between 28th St and Cecil Newman Ln
  • Grading will be taking place in the 27th St E intersection.
