City Council committee approves amended cannabis zoning code updates

cannabis buds in a jar

CPED staff presented proposed zoning code updates for cannabis businesses to the Business, Housing, and Zoning committee on Oct. 22, 2024.  The code update will regulate when, where, and how cannabis businesses can operate. These proposed rules aim to foster a thriving cannabis industry while ensuring the safety and health of residents. View the staff report provided to the committee.

At the meeting, committee members, after consideration, recommended the draft move forward for full City Council review, with three proposed changes:

  • Reduce the required distance between a school and a cannabis dispensary from 500 feet to 300 feet.
  • Reduce the required distance between cannabis dispensaries from 500 feet to 300 feet, except for downtown where no minimum distance would be required.
  • Decrease required minimum size of a commercial or industrial area where a dispensary could be located from five acres to three acres.

Next step: full City Council to consider cannabis zoning

You can learn more about this process of amending the zoning code on our zoning code text amendment webpage and adult-use cannabis amendment webpage.

Shape the future: take the New Nicollet Redevelopment survey

New Nicollet project site (Former Kmart)

The City plans to begin reconstruction Nicollet Avenue between Lake Street and Cecil Newman Lane in 2025. After road construction, the City will work in partnership to develop the remaining site into a high-density, mixed-use, walkable area.

The project team wants to hear from you -- the people who live, work, and play here. We want to hear about your priorities and desires for the site, so we can reflect that in the design and outcomes of the future redevelopment.

The City recently launched Phase III of engagement to ask for input on the priorities for property uses and buildings on the New Nicollet site. Phase III engagement is now focused on gathering community input through a survey.

The survey is available in English, Spanish, and Somali on our website. The survey closes on Friday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. Please take the survey and share with your networks as you see appropriate.

Public Works Community Engagement Consulting Pool

The City of Minneapolis Public Works Department is pleased to share an exciting new partnership and work opportunity: The Public Works Community Engagement Consulting Pool.

This initiative establishes a two-year engagement services master contract that will allow City departments to direct-select businesses and organizations for public engagement needs. Public Works encourages businesses, neighborhood organizations, community-based organizations, artists, and non-profits to apply.

It is an implementation action from the City’s Racial Equity Framework for Transportation and its goal to build trust, cultivate partnerships, and share power with communities of color.

The request for proposals (RFP) is available on the City of Minneapolis eSupplier portal.

We hope that you will review the RFP and consider submitting a proposal. Proposals are due Nov. 26, 2024 at 2 p.m. Please share with other businesses and organizations you believe may be a good fit for this initiative.
