October 8, 2024 (MINNEAPOLIS) Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said that Tuesday afternoon, the Crime Pattern Response Protocol was activated after a string of multiple violent robberies at gunpoint in South Minneapolis. After the protocol was activated, two involved vehicles were located resulting in the arrest of six juveniles.
Around 1130 this morning, police were alerted to a robbery at gunpoint that occurred in the 5100 block of 41 Ave S. Shortly after, officers responded to a second robbery at gunpoint that occurred in the 3400 block of Bloomington Ave. During this robbery, shots were fired at the victim from one of the involved vehicles. Fortunately, no one was struck by the gunfire. A third robbery at gunpoint occurred around 130 pm near 24th St/Pleasant Ave. Commonalities between the three robberies led to the activation of the Crime Pattern Response Protocol.
Officers from multiple agencies including MPD, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, and State Patrol began flooding the area in search of the involved vehicles. Multiple reports began coming into 911 of the involved vehicles driving recklessly in the Fifth Precinct and First Precinct. One of the vehicles was located and officers initiated a stop. The vehicle fled from the stop and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed on I-94 WB near Cedar Ave. The occupants fled on foot from both vehicles and four were quickly apprehended by officers.
A second stolen vehicle was nearby and also crashed. Two occupants from that vehicle fled on foot and were apprehended. Officers were not in pursuit of the second vehicle.
Three other vehicles were involved in the crashes, and there were no reported injuries.
“Our Crime Pattern Response protocol continues to be an effective strategy to quickly locate and arrest those committing crimes of violence in Minneapolis,” Chief O’Hara said. “The fact that I see this activity continuing with children so young - despite all our efforts - is incredibly frustrating and highlights the urgent need for action. I am grateful for the immediate response of law enforcement in finding and arresting these juveniles before they could cause more harm to members than of our community or themselves.”
A total of six juveniles were arrested. Three boys aged 11,12, and 13 were arrested. Two girls aged 14 and one girl aged 12 were arrested. All the juveniles were transported to area hospitals to be evaluated for apparent non-life-threatening injuries resulting from the crash. They will be booked into the Juvenile Detention Center.
The 12-year-old boy had multiple prior contacts with MPD. The other boys and girls had no or limited prior contact with MPD and will be referred to juvenile diversion programs.
MPD is investigating each juvenile’s involvement in the three robberies reported and if they were involved in further activity.
The GO numbers for the robberies are: 24-290003, 24-290015, and 24-290127.
The GO number for the pursuit is: 24-290179.
