October 7, 2024 (MINNEAPOLIS) Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said tonight he is thankful for the officers and crisis team negotiators who were able to bring a peaceful resolution to an incident where shots were reportedly fired inside an apartment today.
O’Hara also said that a 34-year-old man was arrested for property damage after he refused to leave his apartment where suspected gunfire had occurred.
At approximately 3:15 p.m., officers from the 1st Precinct responded to reports of shots fired inside a tenth-floor apartment and heard suspected gunfire when they arrived in the hallway on the 10th floor. They identified an apartment that was occupied by one resident who refused to come out. They secured the scene and began to evacuate the residents. The MPD SWAT Unit and the MPD Crisis Negotiations Team responded and assisted with continued evacuations and worked to establish communications with the man inside the apartment.
The man inside the apartment broke a hole through the wall leading into the hallway. During the incident, the man inside the apartment threw items from the window and through the hole in the wall. Officers were able to distract the man, use a Taser, and take the man into custody. The man had minor injuries believed to have occurred before he was taken into custody. Officers immediately secured the apartment but did not see any ballistic evidence or weapons in plain view inside the apartment. Officers secured a warrant to fully search the apartment.
The arrested man was taken to Hennepin Healthcare Hospital for evaluation of his injures. He was later booked into the Hennepin County Jail for property damage.
MPD believes that mental health challenges were a contributing factor in today’s incident.
“I'm incredibly thankful to the police officers, SWAT Team members, and crisis negators who responded today,” said Chief O’Hara. They performed heroically and with great restraint trying to rescue individuals who they thought were in danger of gunfire. They came up with a significant plan to safely take this person into custody quickly. I'm just incredibly grateful to them, and I'm thankful that we're able to end this relatively quickly, in about an hour and a half, with no other persons being injured.”
The GO# for this incident is 24-289140.
