1st Ave S Reconstruction project overview

The Minneapolis Public Works Department plans to reconstruct 1st Ave. S from Lake St. to Franklin Ave., including replacing the Midtown Greenway Bridge. In addition to new pavement, the project will include new sidewalks, an off-street bicycle facility, updated safety features, sanitary and storm main replacement, and green stormwater infrastructure.

6 Hour closure of Midtown Greenway on October 7

The Midtown Greenway will be closed Monday, October 7 from 6 a.m. to noon to allow a paving truck to back down the greenway to pave the last temporary trail configuration. The detour goes from Nicollet Ave. to 5th Ave. S using 28th St. The greenway is anticipated to open at noon but is subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

The intersection of 28th St E. will re-open the early part of October. Drivers and bikers will need to follow the posted detour ­­­­­­­­­­­route.

First Ave. S will continue to be closed through the fall and drivers will need to follow the posted detour ­­­­­­­­­­­route.

  • First Ave. S is closed between 24th St. and Lake St. through the fall
  • Vehicle detour route: Lake St., Lyndale Ave. and Franklin Ave.
  • Bicycle detour route: Lake St., Blaisdell Ave. and Nicollet Ave., and Franklin Ave.

What went on this past week

  • Crews worked on formwork for the deck of the new bridge over the Midtown Greenway and set girders on the northern spans
  • Storm sewer work continues between 28th St and Cecil Newman Ln.
  • Lighting system installation continued between Cecil Newman Lane and 27th St E.
  • CenterPoint Energy replaced a portion of their gas main at 27th St E.
  • Crews continue to replace the sanitary main between 27th and 26th St E.
  • Sanitary main installation continues between 25th St E. and 24th St E. The 25th St intersection is closed, and the 24th St E. intersection is open.
  • Paving work continued at 28th St E. This includes new pavement, pedestrian corners, and a segment of off-street bicycle facility.
  • Curb and gutter was installed between 27th and 28th St E.

What to expect next week

  • Expect additional noise, dust, and vibration as crews continue to work on the 1st Ave. bridge.
  • The bike lanes along 1st Ave. will be closed between Lake St and 24th St E.
  • Storm work continues near Cecil Newman Ln.
  • Concrete work for the sidewalk and bike facility will be installed at 28th St E. The final layer of asphalt will be placed.
  • Work on the new lighting system will take place between 27th and 28th St E.
  • Valves on the water main at 27th St E will be replaced.
  • Grading for the street and sidewalk will take placed between 28th and Cecil Newman Ln.
  • Sanitary main installation will continue between 27th and 26th St E. Sanitary main preparation work will be ongoing between 26th and 25th St E. 26th St E will remain open.
  • Sanitary main replacement continues between 25th and 24th St E.
  • The Midtown Greenway trail is anticipated to shift the temporary paving set up in early October, there will be a half day closure the morning of October 7 to allow paving trucks to safely drive on the trail. See top of project update for detour map.
