Minneapolis Police Arrest Man Minutes after he Shot a Teenager Downtown

September 16, 2024 (MINNEAPOLIS) Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said 1st Precinct officers heard gunfire at approximately 4:22 p.m. this afternoon.  Two minutes later, officers located evidence of gunfire in a parking lot near 5th St N and Hennepin Av.   At about 4:25 p.m., officers arrested an 18-year-old man in the alley behind the 1st Precinct and recovered a gun.  At approximately 4:27 p.m., near 8th St N and Hennepin Ave N, Metro Transit Police located a 14-year-old boy with at least one apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wound.  The injured teenager had run to that location and may have tried to board a bus. He was transported to Hennepin Healthcare Hospital.

The adult suspect was booked into the Hennepin County Jail for the shooting and for unrelated warrants.

Minneapolis Forensic Scientists processed the scene and collected evidence.

Minneapolis Investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led up to the shooting.

“In the span of about 5 minutes, after hearing gunfire, officers located a scene, arrested a suspect, recovered a gun, and rendered aid to a teenager injured by the gunfire,” said O’Hara.   “This is incredible work by these officers, and I am thankful for the partnership we have with other law enforcement agencies, like the Metro Transit Police.  However, this is yet another clear example of the very real problem of the gun violence we have in this city. MPD will continue its focused efforts to root out this problem that has such tragic results.”

The GO number is 24-266025.
