The Battle of the Badges BBQ is back! On September 7, Mayor Frey joined the Minneapolis Police Department, Minneapolis Fire Department, Minneapolis Park Police, and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office to host the 8th Annual "Battle of the Badges & the People's BBQ" in North Commons Park.
Hundreds of residents showed up for the free community event, which included entertainment, games, and a friendly grill-off between first responders vying for the title of "Best Ribs in the City."
The law enforcement event came on the heels of the City announcing a 45% increase in applications to MPD compared to last year. The increase is in large part due to a new recruitment campaign, police contract, and boots-on-the-ground efforts.
On Friday, Mayor Frey joined local leaders and community members in north Minneapolis to honor Bernadette Anderson by renaming a street in her honor. Anderson was a community leader, civil rights advocate, and a beloved mother of six who spent years mentoring youth and opening her home to those in need.
"Bernadette Anderson’s north Minneapolis home, where she mentored some of the greatest musical legends like Prince, is remembered by many as the birthplace of the Minneapolis sound. Known as “Queen Bernie,” her influence went beyond music. She opened her doors and her heart to youth — and left a lasting impact on countless lives," said Mayor Frey.
Bernadette Anderson Way runs along Russell Avenue North between Plymouth Avenue North and 12th Avenue North. Mayor Frey also proclaimed September 13 as "Bernadette Anderson Day in the City of Minneapolis."

The streets were packed in downtown Minneapolis over the weekend! Following a successful and busy summer downtown, thousands of people visited the area for various sporting events, including roughly 50,000 people for the Red Bull Showrun Formula 1 Exhibition near The Commons.
More than 1,800 events took place across downtown over the summer, including the Taste of Minnesota and USA Gymastics Olympic Team Trials. A recent WCCO TV report said, "Minneapolis hotels have recorded more than $42.1 million in total guest room revenue in August — the third straight month with revenue above $42 million."
“By the numbers, the acceleration of our recovery and the pace of change continues. We are leading the nation in the rate of visitor return to downtown with activity up by 45% in the past year,” said Mayor Frey during his State of the City Address in May.
Mayor Frey recently joined Council Member Rainville, Council Member Wonsley, Chief O'Hara, and U of M Police leaders to celebrate the grand opening of the University of Minnesota Off-Campus Safety Center. Housed in the former Kitty Cat Klub, the new community hub offers a dedicated space for studying, a classroom for safety education, self-defense courses, and access to legal services.
The center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m.
The City of Minneapolis is celebrating “Welcoming Week” now until September 22. Welcoming Week is a nationwide celebration that brings residents together for events fostering mutual understanding and a sense of belonging for all, including residents born outside of the United States. This year’s theme in the City is “We’re All In” as the City honors everyone that calls the City of Lakes home.
“This year’s Welcoming Week theme, ‘We’re All In,’ couldn’t be more fitting,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who echoed that statement in this video message. “As a city, we’re all in when we uplift and celebrate our broad cultural heritage. We’re all in when we ensure every resident—new or old—feels safe, respected and valued. Welcoming Week reminds us that there is strength in diversity, and it reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that every resident of Minneapolis feels they truly belong here.”
Throughout the week, the City will host various events and has several ways to share information. Mayor Frey will also join other city, state and federal leaders for a Citizenship Day oath ceremony tomorrow, Sept. 17, at St. Paul’s Union Depot at 2 pm. Newly naturalized residents will take the oath to become United States citizens.
