Ward 1 News from Council President Elliott Payne

August 23rd, 2024

A message from Council President Elliott Payne

Hello neighbors,

There's been a lot of news coverage this week about work we've been doing on the Council that I wanted to share with you. There's been numerous stories about the resolution I authored for the Auditor to look into "coaching" by MPD. I talked about this in our last newsletter and you can read more about it in these stories on Axios, the Star Tribune, and Racket

We also had 2 presentations this week in the Public Health & Safety Committee. one was a presentation from the Health Department on the Opioid Settlement Funds Strategic Plan report. Some of the discussion on this presentation was covered by Sahan Journal. There was also a presentation from the Unity Community Mediation Team about some of their work that was covered on MPR

Lastly there's an article in today's Star Tribune about new data from the Federal Reserve that debunks a lot of myths about people leaving Minneapolis.

I'm looking forward to connecting with you all at office hours, community 1-1s, and other events coming up like the Waite Park Fall Festival on 9/14!

Best,

    Elliott

Public hearing Sept. 12 on the METRO Blue Line extension

You can comment on preliminary design plans for the METRO Blue Line Extension. The project will extend the Blue Line from Target Field Station through North Minneapolis to Brooklyn Park.

The project can improve the speed and reliability of transit, enhance street safety for all modes of travel, advance climate goals, and make it easier to reach resources, schools and workplaces.

Cities along the proposed route are holding public meetings to discuss the plans. Minneapolis will hold its public hearing in September:

Minneapolis public hearing 1:30 p.m. during the Climate and Infrastructure Committee meeting Thursday, Sept. 12 Public Service Center, 250 Fourth St. S., Council Chamber, Room 350

Find out how to participate in a public hearing.

You can also send your comments by email.

The project is co-led by the Metropolitan Council and Hennepin County.

Information sessions on zoning for cannabis businesses

Two online information sessions will cover proposed zoning regulations for cannabis businesses in Minneapolis. City staff will present recommendations followed by time for questions and answers.

The State of Minnesota legalized adult-use recreational cannabis in 2023. Since then, Minneapolis has been getting ready. Our goal is to create rules that support the new legal cannabis industry and keep our community safe and healthy.

4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 Join online on Teams.

The City’s zoning code needs updating with new rules to regulate when, where and how cannabis businesses can operate. Staff introduced draft regulations June 13. Read the staff report and draft amendments.

Sign up for updates on the cannabis industry in Minneapolis.

Get ready for back to school

The first day of school for Minneapolis Public Schools students is Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Help ensure that your student is prepared by reviewing their supply list, updating their calendar with important dates and helping them to transition back into a regular routine.

Find more information about MPS's 2024-2025 academic calendar here.

Check your children’s vaccinations before school starts

August is National Immunization Awareness Month and the start of back-to-school season. Nearly 40% of children enrolled in Minneapolis Public Schools are behind on their childhood vaccines.

Measles is in the community, with the most cases in our state since 2017.

Talk with your healthcare provider to stay current with your child’s immunizations. This can help your family avoid missing school, activities, work, family events and vacation.
