Project overview

The Minneapolis Public Works Department plans to reconstruct 1st Ave. S. from Lake St. to Franklin Ave. including replacing the Midtown Greenway Bridge. In addition to new pavement, the project will include new sidewalks, an off-street bicycle facility, updated safety features, sanitary and storm main replacement, and green stormwater infrastructure

Construction update

28th St. and 1st Ave. S Intersection Closure

Crews continue to work on sewer and roadway construction, a month-long closure of the 1st Ave. S and 28th St. intersection began Thursday, July 18. Drivers should continue to follow the posted detour and use Blaisdell Ave., Lake St. and Park Ave. The intersection is expected to reopen August 16. Please be aware that there will be an additional closure later this season to rebuild this intersection, including new pavement, sidewalks, and signal system.

1st Ave. S closure

First Ave. S will continue to be closed through the fall and drivers will need to follow the posted detour ­­­­­­­­­­­route.

• First Ave. S is closed between 27th St. and Lake St. through the fall
• Vehicle detour route: Lake St., Lyndale Ave. and Franklin Ave.
• Bicycle detour route: Lake St., Blaisdell Ave. and Nicollet Ave., and Franklin Ave.

What went on this past week

• Crews poured additional columns for the bridge supports and completed preparations to pour the pier caps this weekend.
• Sanitary sewer work continues from between 28th St. and Cecil Newman Lane. The intersection of 27th St. remains closed.
• 28th St. and 1st Ave. S intersection remained closed as crews worked on sanitary and storm facilities.
• Pavement removals and grading began between Lake St. and the bridge over the Midtown Greenway. This work does not affect the greenway.
• Crews worked on storm sewers at the 28^th St E intersection and 27^th St intersection.
• Crews worked on the water main at the 28^th St E intersection.

What to expect next week

• Expect additional noise, dust, and vibration as crews continue to work on the 1st Ave. bridge.
• 28th St. and 1st Ave. S intersection will remain closed through the week and is expected to reopen by Friday, August 16.
• Storm sewer work will take place at the 28^th St E intersection and between 27^th St and 28^th St .
• Water main work will take place at the 28^th St E intersection.
• Concrete curb and sidewalk are being installed between Lake St and the bridge over the Midtown Greenway. The new lighting system will begin installation.  This will not affect the greenway.

Upcoming events

Midtown Greenway closure

In the coming weeks, the Midtown Greenway will be closed for 7 days as crews continue to work on the bridge. The detour will go from Nicollet Ave to 5th Ave S using 28th St. Dates are tentatively scheduled for August 26 – September 2.
