Ward 9 Updates from Council Member Jason Chavez

July 27, 2024

A message from Council Member Chavez

Dear neighbor,

On June 4, 2024, I informed you that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a settlement with Smith Foundry to resolve the accused violations of the Clean Air Act. This was a step in the right direction to hold the foundry accountable.

I wanted to inform you about new and developing updates. On August 15, 2024, the Smith Foundry located in East Phillips announced that they will be shutting down completely. This is a huge victory for residents in Phillips and advocates for clean air and water. I will be sure to keep you all updated on what comes next.

I am particularly proud of our residents for their continued push on this issue. There is still more left to do, but this is a moment to celebrate.

Now that we have addressed community concerns with Smith Foundry and Bituminous Roadways, our next focus will be to make sure the East Phillips Urban Farm Project gets done.

Stay tuned,

Jason Chavez
