The Minneapolis Public Works Department plans to reconstruct 1st Ave. S from Lake St. to Franklin Ave., including replacing the Midtown Greenway Bridge. In addition to new pavement, the project will include new sidewalks, an off-street bicycle facility, updated safety features, sanitary and storm main replacement, and green stormwater infrastructure.
Upcoming 28th St. and 1st Ave. S intersection closure
As crews continue to work on sewer and roadway construction, a month-long closure of the 1st Ave. S and 28th St. intersection will be needed beginning Thursday, July 18. Drivers will need to follow the posted detour and use Blaisdell Ave., Lake St. and Park Ave. The intersection is expected to reopen August 16.
1st Ave. S closure
First Ave. S will continue to be closed through the fall and drivers will need to follow the posted detour route.
- First Ave. S is closed between 27th St. and Lake St. through the fall
- Vehicle detour route: Lake St., Lyndale Ave. and Franklin Ave.
- Bicycle detour route: Lake St., Blaisdell Ave. and Nicollet Ave., and Franklin Ave.
- Crews continued to excavate the ground and installed erosion control in preparation for the bridge foundation work.
- Pile driving for the new bridge foundations began on Thursday, July 11.
- Sanitary sewer work continues from between 27th St. and 28th St. The intersection of 27th St. remains closed.
- Storm sewer work continues from between Lake St. and up to the bridge over the Midtown Greenway. This work does not affect the greenway.
- Expect additional noise, dust, and vibration as crews continue to work on the 1st Ave. bridge.
- Pile driving for the new bridge foundations will continue through Friday, July 19.
- 28th St. and 1st Ave. S intersection closure begins on Thursday, July 18.
