Dear Neighbor 7/3

Left to right: celebrating Broders' 30th birthday, marching in Pride, and checking in with Public Works staff about the 43rd and Upton intersection projects

Dear Neighbor,

Summer is flying by! I have been making the most of the unusually mild weather and taking advantage of many opportunities to be in community with you:

  • Celebrating with Molly Broder at Broders' 30th Birthday Bash. There were over 500 people at this event, with plenty of pasta to go around! I especially enjoyed and highly recommend the truffle pasta.
  • Marching in the Twin Cities Pride event alongside my sons, Charlie and Oliver, my childhood friend Elysia, and her daughter Ryan. I am proud to represent a City that is so welcoming and inclusive to all.
  • Visiting with the Public Works Sanitary Water & Sewers team at the 43rd and Upton construction site. Great news: the City of Minneapolis has completed their work and exited the intersection on schedule, despite the recent rain. Metro Transit now continues their portion of the project, and we are eager to push them to completion.

I hope you have a fun and safe Fourth of July tomorrow, however you’re celebrating. If you’re looking for something to do, check out the riverfront fireworks with the return of Minneapolis Park Board’s Red, White, and Boom event. I hope to see you there!

Yours In Service,
Linea

City's Police Labor Contract Update

The police labor contract came before the Administration & Enterprise Oversight (AEO) Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 25. After a presentation from City staff, a presentation from a community group, and the opportunity for public comment, I voted in support of moving this agreement forward for a vote at the City Council meeting on Thursday, June 27 along with Council Members Vetaw and Cashman. Unfortunately, Council Members Ellison, Wonsley, and Chughtai voted against moving the contract forward. Because the vote was 3-3, the contract was not successfully moved forward and will remain in the committee for an additional meeting.

This contract has been in negotiation for years. There were historic amounts of community engagement that shaped the current agreement before the City Council. I am disappointed by my colleagues continuing to slow walk nearly every important decision that comes before this body. Delaying this comes at the cost of public safety, police officers, and most importantly the very residents the City Council is supposed to represent. There is nothing progressive about refusing to make progress on the issues that matter most to residents.

Because the contract did not move out of committee, there will again be an opportunity for public comment at the upcoming Administration & Enterprise Oversight Committee Meeting on Monday, July 8 at 1:30 p.m.

Written comments may also be submitted for the record of this public hearing. Written comments may be submitted three different ways:

Red, White, and Boom!

Fourth of July Fireworks Return to Riverfront

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board will resume hosting its Red, White and Boom! Fourth of July event on the Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront this year.

This year, festivities will take place on the west side of the river, at Water Works and the Stone Arch Bridge parking lot. Live music and food trucks start at 6 p.m. July 4 with fireworks starting at 10 p.m.

Parkway and Road Closures for July 4 Weekend

Bde Maka Ska closures

New for 2024, West Bde Maka Ska Parkway will be closed to vehicles from Richfield Road to Xerxes Avenue South. East Bde Maka Ska Parkway will be closed from West 36th Street to Lake Street. The Bde Maka Ska closures will take effect the evening of July 3 and reopen the morning of July 5. Linden Hills Neighborhood Association, East Bde Maka Neighborhood Association, and West Bde Maka Ska Neighborhood Association have all sent communications to the MPRB supporting parkway segment closures over Independence Day.

Closing these segments of parkways will help safeguard pedestrians and bicyclists visiting these popular July 4th park destinations, in addition to helping prevent some of the problems we've experienced in previous years.

43rd and Upton Update

Minneapolis Public Works Sanitary Water & Sewers completed their work on Friday, June 28, and exited the intersection. The intersection remains closed as Metro Transit continues E Line station construction and pedestrian upgrades.

Metro Transit has identified unexpected utility conflicts, which will require the intersection to remain closed for a portion of their construction. They expect to complete their project in late August. They are currently evaluating the utility conflicts and will share a timeline for reopening the intersection in the coming week.

Stay Engaged and Informed

Meet with Council Member Palmisano

One of the best parts of my job is getting to meet with my constituents, learn more about you and hear your questions, concerns, hopes and dreams for our shared community.

If you'd like to schedule a time to meet with me, send me an e-mail and my staff will help get it scheduled. Please let me know what you'd like to talk about and a convenient place to meet—a coffee shop, a park, your home, my office, etc. I try to reserve Fridays for constituent meetings, but can work them in other times, as necessary, too.
