The Minneapolis Public Works Department plans to reconstruct 1st Ave. S. from Lake St. to Franklin Ave. including replacing the Midtown Greenway Bridge. In addition to new pavement, the project will include new sidewalks, an off street bicycle facility, updated safety features, sanitary and storm main replacement, and green stormwater infrastructure
Lake Street Closure
Beginning Friday evening, June 21, Lake St. will be closed while crews work on sewer and roadway construction. The closure will extend from Nicollet Ave. to Stevens Ave. and is anticipated to last through Thursday, June 27.

The Midtown Greenway closed Monday, June 3 for crews to demolish the 1st Ave. S bridge. The detour goes from Nicollet Ave. to 5th Ave. S using 28th St. Due to unmarked material discovered during demolition, the greenway is anticipated to open Monday, June 24.
1st Ave S Closure
First Ave. S will continue to be closed through the fall and drivers will need to follow the posted detour route.
- First Ave. S is closed between 27th St. and Lake St. through the fall
- Vehicle detour route: Lake St., Lyndale Ave. and Franklin Ave.
- Bicycle detour route: Lake St., Blaisdell Ave. and Nicollet Ave., and Franklin Ave.
What went on this past week?
- The Midtown Greenway remained closed (see above for details).
- Crews continued to remove a sanitary main buried under the greenway and place a concrete-encased water main under the greenway.
- Crews removed the top layer of road along 1st Ave. S from 27th St. to the greenway.
What to expect next week?
- Expect additional noise, dust, and vibration as crews continue to work on the 1st Ave. bridge.
- No parking on 1st Ave. S from 27th St. to the greenway while crews work on raising sanitary sewer access covers.
