The Minneapolis Public Works Department is reconstructing 1st Ave. S. from Lake St. to Franklin Ave. including replacing the Midtown Greenway Bridge. In addition to new pavement, the project will include new sidewalks, an off street bicycle facility, updated safety features, sanitary and storm main replacement, and green stormwater infrastructure
Midtown Greenway closure
The Midtown Greenway closed Monday, June 3 for crews to demolish the 1st Ave. S bridge. The detour goes from Nicollet Ave. to 5th Ave. S using 28th St. The greenway is tentatively scheduled to reopen June 17 but is dependent on weather.
We have received a number of inquiries regarding the Midtown Greenway closure and have requested additional signage to ensure the safety of all those who use the greenway. The city will monitor the cones placed along the detour on 28th St. Project staff are available every Thursday to answer questions and hear concerns. 1st Ave. S closure
First Ave. S will continue to be closed through the fall and drivers will need to follow the posted detour route.
- First Ave. S is closed between 27th St. and Lake St. through the fall
- Vehicle detour route: Lake St., Lyndale Ave. and Franklin Ave.
- Bicycle detour route: Lake St., Blaisdell Ave and Nicollet Ave, and Franklin Ave
- Crews continued work on the sanitary sewer line at the intersection of Lake St. and 1st Ave. S.
- The Midtown Greenway closed (see above for details).
- Crews began the Midtown Greenway bridge demolition.
- The intersection of 27th St. and 1st Ave. S was closed for utility relocation.
- Expect additional noise, dust, and vibration as crews continue to demolish the 1st Ave. bridge, excavate its foundation, remove a sanitary main buried under the greenway, and place a concrete-encased water main under the greenway.
