Minneapolis Police end a crime spree with arrests and respond to a homicide on Saturday morning.

June 1, 2024 (Minneapolis): Chief Brian O’Hara provided the following information detailing a homicide that occurred near the 3400 Block of Knox Av and an unrelated pursuit that resulted in arrests 20 minutes later.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., officers from the 4th Precinct responded to the report of a shooting that occurred mid-block on 34th Ave N between James Av N and Knox Av N.  Officers arrived and located a man injured by gunfire laying on the ground outside of a vehicle.  “This is the same way that Officer Jamal Mitchell found a suspect down just this past Thursday,” said Chief O’Hara.

The injured person on 34th Ave N was a 25-year-old male with gunshot wounds that were life threatening. He was unresponsive and not breathing. The officers began CPR on the victim who was then transported to North Memorial Healthcare where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.

Preliminary information indicates that the male was shot while inside of a vehicle.  There are a number of evidentiary and investigative leads that MPD investigators are pursuing.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the deceased male’s name along with the cause and manner of his death.

The GO number is 24-148440.

Earlier at an unrelated incident, at approximately 10 a.m., Officers noted a crime spree that occurred in the 3rd Precinct with several incidents that occurred in the area around the 4100 Block of Elliot Av S.  These incidents involved two vehicles believed to be stolen and juveniles breaking into vehicles.  There was a report that a gun was displayed during at least one of these incidents.

A crime spree response protocol was activated, and Chief O’Hara approved a pursuit of the vehicles. At approximately 11:50 a.m., one of vehicles was located near 32nd St E and Hiawatha and a pursuit was initiated.  Near the 3200 block of Longfellow, three juveniles fled from the vehicle.  After a foot pursuit, the three juveniles were arrested, and 4 handguns were recovered.

“The three juveniles that we have in custody are juveniles that are known to us,” O’Hara said.   “We are thankful to safely have them off the street and under arrest, those guns were recovered, and thankfully, no one was injured. I'm incredibly proud of the work that everyone is continuing to do, and that's evidenced by what happened this morning. Our officers got four guns off the street. Our officers are continuing to show up to work every day. They're continuing to respond and they're doing a great job trying to help keep people safe. And I'm so thankful for what they do.”

The GO# for the pursuit is 24-148451
