It is with a heavy heart that I share with you sad news. As many of you know, our city lost a hero yesterday. Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell, a two-year veteran of our Police Department, was tragically killed in the line of duty Thursday evening. Another police officer and a Minneapolis firefighter sustained minor injuries, and a community member was killed.
Our City extends our deepest condolences to Officer Mitchell’s family and loved ones and the families of the victims of this tragedy.
Every day, our police officers take an oath to protect and serve our city and community. They courageously serve under stressful and often dangerous conditions, putting their lives on the line to protect others.
The tragedy that occurred yesterday is something we hope never happens to one of our own. Officer Mitchell was a beloved father, son, fiancé, friend, and Minneapolis community member -- and our City will remember his name and his service forever.
Our office is committed to informing the community as updates come out about the tragic incident that claimed the lives of Officer Mitchell and other civilians.
