Ward 9 Updates from Council Member Jason Chavez

May 29, 2024

A message from Council Member Chavez

Dear neighbor,

Over the past month, I’ve been meeting with Council Leadership and Committee Leadership, the Mayor's Administration and others to ensure critical safety programs are still on the ground to keep residents safe.

I write this update with a heavy heart. Regarding the reckless violence that has rocked Ward 9.

On May 19, 2024, a Native woman was found dead near 28th and Bloomington. The Medical Examiner will report on the cause. Inspector Gomez has been talking with Native elders in the community.

On May 19, 2024, two victims were shot on the 2900 block of Cedar Avenue South. The mother was shot in the neck and later died. The 2-year-old baby was shot but thankfully made it alive. Inspector Gomez and the Latinx Community Navigator have been in touch with the families. There have been no arrests.

On May 19, 2024, an adult victim was shot in the neck at 2829 16th Ave South. They are in a critical condition. There have been no arrests.

There’s been a lot of stress, violence and pain in East Phillips and Midtown Phillips. As we head into the summer, it’s clear that we need to be proactive in addressing community violence and ensure that the concerns in the Office of Community Safety are resolved.

Last week, I reached out to Commissioner Barnette for an update on the Collaborative Public Safety Strategies’ amendment I passed in December 2023 that was specifically for this area. This program is supposed to serve East Phillips and Midtown Phillips where this violence is occurring. I will update all of you once I get a response on the status of this and how the community will be able to develop these safety programs to prevent more tragedies.

City Councils and Community Members Unite to Advocate for Temporary Protected Status for Ecuador

Press Conference

City Councils throughout Minnesota have taken a significant step in advocating for Ecuadorian nationals residing in the United States with the passage of resolutions in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Columbia Heights urging Federal officials to designate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ecuador.

The passage of these resolutions is thanks to the advocacy of members of the TPS Collective of COPAL, the leadership of city council members, and other dedicated individuals and organizations.

Today, I joined forces with Columbia Heights Council Member Rachel James, Abdihamid Badri, representing St. Paul Council Member HwaJeong Kim's office, members of the community and representatives from COPAL at a joint press conference to emphasize the significance of this policy resolution.

The resolution calls upon the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to designate Ecuador for Temporary Protected Status, providing temporary immigration relief to Ecuadorian nationals currently residing in the United States.
